Removing stock head unit from GTI

Any suggestions for items i can use to get the head unit out? It has the 4 tiny slots near the corners and i can't think of anything to use.

There's 4 little keys that go in the slots - head unit pops out once you insert them... Should be able to borrow a set from your dealer or car stereo shop

I used four jigsaw blades. Coarse wood ones (so the "teeth" are pretty chunky). Only thing that caught me out was that on the ones i bought the teeth jutted to either side a bit and got a bit caught on the plastic when trying to remove them from the head unit. Squashing them a bit first with some pliers would probably make it ok.

I ended up smashing screw driver in till it came out.

I figured what the hell, i'm not going to use it again... that was until i realised a double din head unit doesn't fit into the 'double din' slot. So looking for an install kit, or going to get the single din install kit i found from uk website, and put in single din.

    Thats looking before you leap.

Its not that bad, just slightly enlarged slits now.

I installed a single din head unit without having to get an install kit. On either side of the hole from the removed headunit there is a slit on the inside half way up the side which i figured was where you insert a support for installing a single din head unit in the top. So i cut a piece of masonite to the correct width, wrapped the ends in some electrical tape to stop any movement and inserted into the slots. I took the rubber stopper off the rear of the stock head and put it on the rear of the new hu so now it's supported front and rear. One $20 single din tray from supercheap auto (as suggested here in another post) with a bit of filing for some of the plastic molding that is out of sight and it fits well.

My mate who is an auto elec gave me a hand with it. You'll find that there isn't separate switching wires for accessories and illumination in the loom as it's all handled through CANBUS. He got around it by using the cigarette lighter power and lighting wires for switching power and illumination. Only unfortunate thing is that the hu doesn't keep playing after you turn off the car as there is no accessories position on the key.

    Here you go!

The piece of masonite I cut to size to fit in the slots at either side. The black at each end is electrical tape wrapped around the masonite to stop it moving around in the slots.

    With the tray installed underneath.

Colours on the headunit worked out almost perfectly. Total fluke considering I bought the headunit a year before the car. The blue on the dash is a lttle more purple but there isn't much in it.

I ended up getting it installed by JB hifi Indooroopilly (QLD). And can i just say, fantastic job.

Took them hours, cause the fitting is so screwed... they ordered in a facia, which didn't fit, so they had to cut that, then fabricated a bracket of some sort... anyway... this is the final result... which i'm pretty happy about.

Worst camera phone in the world pictures... couldn't be bothered resizing them. So they are a little large.

I have the spx 177r's in mine. Great speaker.

You will need spacers in the door tho.
