hey Sean unless the rules are a little different in QLD, the existing OEM bonnet release system qualifies as a secondary bonnet catch. Step one is the in cabin bonnet release and the secondary release is the one you do manually once its been popped. I read the rules when I started out and it says you need one and I was all set to do it, but those rules assume that you are prepping a race car where the standard release isn'tsed/ custom bonnets are fitted etc. I emailed CAMS and they said (as well as my cams affiliated club) that the OE system passes. I'd just hate to see you drilling here and there if you didn't need to.

Thanks Sam. I'd read a little on it and was unsure. The Porsche club dude I was in contact with mentioned it was required so thought I'd have a crack.

yeah fair enough. Ultimately it is up to what the scrutineers at the club hosting the event say they want so right thing to do. Man everyones chopping their front aprons now. Mines off the car now about to get the chop and I trimmed the bumpers top lip off and a few other things to get the air going to the right places. With a CAMS licence, any chance we'll see you doing some hillclimbs next year?

Yup for sure re hill climbs, will have a crack. I've only seen the Mt Cotton one locally, would like to try just to see if it tickles my fancy. It's somewhat of a different skill set to circuit.

I'm also keen to have a crack at autocross with these guys- Welcome to Ipswich West Moreton Auto Club, looks like awesome fun.

We'll see how many events I can get to next year, better be more than this year, though we have a baby on the way so needing to be realistic.

Good stuff. I'll probably do the trek up to the Grafton round of the NSW hillclimb championship next year. Out of state people can run. That's about the only hillclimb I can think of where we likely cross paths unless you want to do Bathurst in march. You've got those softs sitting there ready to go which would be perfect. Re the autocross I was going to email you about those guys. I saw a write up about them in a magazine somewhere. That'd be awesome fun.

So two weeks ago I did the 900km commute to Sydney (actually 1100km to Nowra), to participate in my first VW Nationals. Took a while to get the day started after scrutineering and 2nd group out had a few dramas (one car los

yeah that was a mega mission for you Sean. I'd have been a little underwhelmed too re the lack of action and then with how the sessions were made so short afterwards to get them rolling through. I reckon next road trip you do we'll see if we cant get together a group and rent out a cabin at Wakefield. Leaving direct from a track for a long drive is always 10 times more exhausting.
Yeah it must be strange watching someone punting your old car around a track - when ever I cut something or drill a hole in it I always feel a pang of guilt for what was once your tidy little daily.

I'm actually chuffed to see it out on track turning good times. I'd bought it with that intention back in early 2009, then the red polo came up and thought that was a good way to go. On reflection perhaps it really wasn't, but it's now been running reliably for a couple of years and now done 3x Sydney trips.

Good on you Shorne. Love your work. Too bad about others’ mishaps. Hopefully one day I’ll be back out there with you...
