Question recirculating air on and off switch stuffed?

i think i have a new prob with my car that i havent seen anyone report in this forum before. i searched and came up with nada...

in my gti, i can not turn off the little button on the dash with the circular arrow - the one next to the AC, the one that determines if the cabin recirculates air or takes it from outside. my little light is permanently on, and when i try to turn it off, it comes on again after a second. there is no noise that normally accompanies pressing the button - the noise of the thing opening/closing. no air comes from outside now and driving with the widows shut fogs up the car.

so im not sure if there is somethign wrong with the button (it still clicks fine) or if the actual flap that opens/closes and is driven by i assume a electric motor i stuffed.

anyone got any ideas? i will take a shot at pulling things apart to fix it, but it would be easier if there is a schematic diagram (or what ever they are called when you can see all the individual parts and how they slot in together)

    thanks

not being a **** but by second do you actually mean a second or that it eventually comes on again?

because it will aways switch back to recirculating air after a while. does that for everyone

    ?? Now I'm really confused...........

I'm pretty sure I can turn me reci off/on whenever and it either stays on or off. It has not yet developed a mind of its own.

    Am I alone?

I've not had issues. It is normally off, then changes automatically when you go into reverse, should reset when back to neutral.

Does it change when the aircon is on/off?

hey guys thanks for your input
Whubbsie - it was a actualy second, but as of this morning its staying on permanently.
noone - behaves the same regardless of a/c in use or not.

when putting into reverse, i used to hear it operating, but not anymore and i have zero control over it - the light remains permanently on and i can not open it up regardless of how many time if push the button.

i'll add that up until saturday night, i had not had any problems with this thing. it came on suddenly.

so working backwards from the flap that opens and closes to let the air into the cabin, can somethign get in there to obstruct its operation?

sorry I meant it switches back to fresh air after a while...I know mine does, I can never have it constantly on recirculated air. sorry I think I just confused the situation .

whubbsie - i understand what you are saying, but mine is not opening up again even after a little time.
its like the little more/flap is simply not working and its in the permantly closed position.

reckon its worth a stab looking at the pollen filter? its relatively easy to get to and may indicate a possible system blockage?

well i got my head under the dash and noticed that the little flappy thing, that determines if the air is recirc or not, looked out of alignment. so one gentle push and the thing looked straight again. key in the ignition and it operated as per normal. so thats good - fixed and no cost

cleaned the pollen filter a little bit too while i was under there - it was somewhat black and a few little leaves, so i will replace that soon.
