Rear Tail Lights from 9N - will they fit 9N3?

Hi folks,
I need to replace a tail light on my 06 GTI, and can get my hands on a pair of tail lights from the earlier 9N.
Much has been written about how owners feel about the look of the 9N3 lights, and I have to agree - they let down the appearance of the rear of the car.
So now is my opportunity to replace a cracked light with a set from the 9N - but before making the journey and paying - will they fit, including straight plug in with the connections etc?
I have searched, but couldn't find anyone who has actually done this to their 9N3.

This is for the reverse situation (9n3 lights on a 9n) but according to what those guys were discussing there interchangeable between the two for fitting but the wiring is a bit different. I haven't read through it fully but here's the link if you want to read through that thread more in depth.
