what Engine Oil best for Polo Gti

any recommendation of what engine oil is good for a Polo GTI 2008 done around 42,000km
cant get Liqui Moly in Melbourne dont know why!
what about Castrol Edge? are they good?
anyone tried before?

The manual says for long life service interval ie 15 000 km should use an oil with specification VW 504 00 or VW 503 00 according to the castrol edge website their 5w-30 is rated at VW 502 00/ 505 00 so only suitable for non Long Life service.

Nulon Fully Synthetic 5w30 Euro Engine Oil, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 and Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 meet VW 504 00 as im sure many other oils would.

I use the Nulon as iirc it is usually cheaper than the others but I guess that comes down to personal preference.

I have been using Castrol Edge 0W-40 since day one... Had the car for 4.5 years now, and never had a problem.

Seeing how your warranty expired in 2011, you don't have to use oil that has been explicitly approved by VW, but you should stick with a quality synthetic oil nonetheless.

Also, since the engine in a '08 Polo has indirect injection, the use of 504/507 oil is not as critical.

The new Castrol Edge Titanium 5W-30 should be fine.

Redline may be a bit overkill and expensive?

The 'LongLife' service regime is based on variable intervals determined by the car itself, from anywhere between 15 000 km/12 months and 30 000 km/24 months, depending on how the car is used. Use of 504/507 oils is only compulsory if you are on this regime. And unless something has changed, Australian cars are delivered not to run on this regime.

The 'Time and Distance' service regime is based on fixed intervals, which is set at 15 000 km/12 months. Petrol engines may use 502/505 or 504/507 oils. This is what all Australian delivered cars should be on.

At the moment I'm working on 2005 Golf 1.9TDI, I know it's not the same engine as in Polo GTI. The car had all scheduled services done on time and now at 92,000km the turbocharger failed. It will cost the owner around $3000 to get the engine running again. The engine didn't show any decrease in performance until the end, when it just stopped.



So, I have to say that you should use only VW approved oil and perhaps if you drive under severe driving conditions change the oil at 7,500km or 6 months whichever comes first. It could save you +$3000 somewhere down the track.

To the OP, you can always get Shell Helix Ultra Extra or Penrite Enviro + 5W30 from SuperCheap Auto.

How are you so sure it was a lubrication-based failure?

The PD TDI engine is very picky - it requires either 505.01 or 507.00, both of which were pretty rare back in 2005 (apart from the dealership - and even then, it wasn't guaranteed they'd use the correct oil). Has this car been using the correct oil?

I know mine isn't a GTI, its a TDI, but Ive got 120,000kms and I've been using Fuch's Pro C3 from day one.

I also drop my oil every 7,500kms. Sure its over doing it, but for me, its cheap insurance.

That's a pretty standard stunt for those early TDI Golf 5s, Miro.

Coinciding with what you've established, the ones I've fixed had a pretty blase' service history.

Probably not, since a 2005 Golf wasn't fitted with a DPF, so I would expect it to have used 505.01 oil (which was also probably uncommon back in the day, but that's no excuse - just get it from the dealer if need be).

To say that only a VW approved oil should be used in a 2008 Polo GTI, based on a turbocharger failure in a PD TDI (without knowing the cause - looks like a mechanical failure to my untrained eyes) is not a conclusion I would've drawn.

As long as the oil is able to meet the performance requirements of VW 502.00 (which shouldn't be terribly difficult for any synthetic worth its salt), it'll be fine for a 2008 Polo GTI.
