2006 GTI Polo - Big Turbo Build - Louis19's Build Thread
It really makes me appreciate the Polo even more. How "safe" is it, using the stage 1 for everyday use. In terms of driveline and internals? Has anyone had many problems? I only ask because once I started on the WRX, I had it at 15psi and stuff started going crazy, drive shaft, turbo, fittings, Pistons ect.

My Polo had it's life limited by a Stge 1 tune. The tune ran very lean, which the tune you have in the loaner isn't. It also ate a turbo but in my opinion, that was due to bad servicing.
There are many many Polo's running stage 1 and 2 tunes with no dramas at all. Certainly the engine itself is solid.

It'll be safe mate. I ran phase 1 even after adding a dump pipe, turbo inlet pipe and ported exhaust/wastegate allowing a lot more air to flow. Thats not an ideal state of affairs - I really should have been on phase 2 by then for far better driveability etc etc. So by rights if anything was going to expose the phase 1 tune for not being able to keep the fuelling up it would be that, but my air fuel ratios remained spot on and the car was flowing air equivalent to over 230hp. If your on phase 1 and more or less stock except for some inlet mods then it'll be safe as.
My red polo has been driven hard pretty much it's whole life, making up to double the power of a stocko, still on stock internals. Stock power is about 90kwatw, stage 1 tune perhaps 120kwatw, with supporting mods closer to 130kw. Stage 2 (tune with downpipe and FMIC) around the 140kwatw. stage 3 (ko4 turbo) you're talking 150's to 170's atw.
My daily polo used to be tracked quite a lot until I bought the red one 2yrs ago. There's plenty of polo's with 160,000kms running stage 2 and 3 modification daily and reliably. These are a stronger engines than the ej20 and 25's in the Subaru's, they can handle more abuse and aren't as sensitive to fuel starvation and knock as the boxer. The gearboxes, if not abused are fine, but the odd one has broken. Being fwd, adding power results in wheel spin unlike an AWD which transfer all the engine power into the gearbox and tyres, something has to give and it's usually not traction.

Sweet as lads. Cheers for the replies and info. Puts my mind at ease now.
My 2006 Polo had a Stage 1 tune from Gavin with Seat intake since I got it at less than 40,000k's. At around 100,000k's I got a downpipe and exhaust and a Stage 2 tune. It now has 165,000k's on it and it still puts a smile on my dial every time I drive it.
2001 Bora 4 Motion Sport now used by number two son
