    Polo Intake Thread

    (holds hand up and waves)

    Yep, that's me....I'm the intake skeptic...show me the deltas...dyno, quarter times, lap times, 80-120 times...anything before/after...and I could become a believer.

Have seen nothing yet, and am deeply fearful those "results" people talk about are largely the placebo effect arising from a little more induction noise and more audible turbo whistle. Suggestion : add a nice, big, noisy BOV; the effect will be even better!

My rationale is this: we're dealing with a factory FI car here; the factory engineers have everything to gain in making the intake side of the engine as efficient as possible, so they do; whereas, on the exhaust and tune side, they are grossly hampered by environmental regulations and the need to ensure the engine handles a range of fuel qualities. The results are compromises in the tune and on the exhaust configuration. Body design constraints, weight and cost are all factors against most efficient intercooling, so there's possible gains there, too.

That's why, IMHO, the best gains aftermarket are (in order) (a) chip (b) dump/exhaust (c) FMIC (provided it's not too expensive and heavy)....intake mods are a long way back, and personally I'd be spending money on brakes and handling for the Pog, before throwing any money at all in that direction

I am happy to be proven wrong here -- it's just my opinion based on the evidence I've seen so far.

Onya Timbo, it took considerable provocation to get you to come out of the woods

Interesting theory on intake upgrades, I don't necessarily agree with it, but it should get us debating the pros/cons. All good

To add my bit, there's one thing that shouldn't be overlooked, and that's the effect of higher and colder air charge that results from an intake upgrade (providing it's a good quality set up). If we're talking about fuel injection, then consider the MAF sensor and what it does when it senses higher volume and colder air, ie ECU responds by injecting higher fuel levels to match AFR = more power.

"results are compromises in the tune and on the exhaust configuration. Body design constraints, weight and cost are all factors"..

what makes you think the same compromises don't apply to intake design? surely they would - the pog's intake is compromised by trying to get around a big clunky battery that hogs the engine bay.

Aaah....so what you're saying is that we should redesign the engine bay?!

OK, so we pull out the battery, fit an Odyssey or similar, and install a BMC CDA...and what do we get (for our $600+)?

I'm not advocating for any intake upgrade option, there's plenty of options available, depending on the result you're after (and $$$ sure). A good way of experimenting is to try Kai's pod set up, it's cheap as chips and provides a very good insight into the effect modifying intake has (although heat soke is an issue, but that's why you shell out for a CDA, eg high air charge design). ..like most things, quality costs (usually).

I have since made a heat shield and it rocks.

    29.99 for airfilter
    2.50 for slice of heatsheild
2.50 pvc pipe cold air piping

Ill get photos in the morning...

Most of you wont want to do it as it will be a defect and is very very dodgy but does the job alot better than the stock filter.

I have used a pod heat shield set up in the polo but find with the new seat intake its just as good.

Best thing about the pod was the smooth responce when u lift of the throttle without the pod u get a slight jerk. The turbo and DV were also alot louder.

I got this idear from looking at a uk based company called jabba sport they use a similar set up on the ibiza.
