    Polo GTi - mods to do Targa Tasmania

    I am considering doing Targa Tour 2017 (back-end category of Targa Tasmania and no timing). Although not the competitive part of Targa, what mods would I need to succeed a full week of (reliable) spirited driving with high grip, good braking and power. I am almost thinking of buying a cheap GTi and modded it to suit. Has anyone done a Targa in their 9N GTi?, cheers

    Seen guys do this race in Hyundai's just because they are a cheap throw away rally car, but for an extra few grand the Polo will be a blast with only a few cheap mods.

    - Pick up a chipped GTI, then spend money saved on a decent set of tires, had the Bridgestone re002/3's for over 2 years, been a great set in the wet or dry with stiff sidewall, can get the power down easily when you warm them up.

    - Control arm bushes are a must, go with either poly superpro's or rubber ones (bit more comfortable)

    - Picked up an Ultra Racing rear sway bar few years back, really tightened up the cornering, other option is coilovers but not cheap.

    - Intake needs opening up to, few options, pd160 would be most reliable if you can find one.

    - Change the gearbox fluid as its prob still running the oem stuff, most recommend redline mtl but had liquimolly put in mine few thousand kms back, stock fluid gets a bit sticky when shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

    - gotta do brakes myself, any ideas anyone?


    Would be a nice track to do legit some day, took mine for a run around there few months back, was a blast.

    Pretty much as said above will get you out there. Good suspension, I wouldn't lower it much if at all as I'm guessing you'll want wheel travel and clearance for B-road storming. Not sure if any underbody protection is desirable for such an event.

    Brake wise - as a non-competitive event stick with a stock calipers, some DBA rotors and a good pad on the front. You'll need something motorsport oriented. The stock set-up can do a very good job when matched with appropriate pads for the application. I used to track my daily regularly on the stock sized gear. A fellow member, Eddy, was doing sub 1:10's at wakefield on the factory calipers and aggressive pads.

    Power - stage 1 or 2 level of tune will get you moving nicely and retain grip. stage 1 you can get away without a FMIC (though is good), air intake, turbo intake pipe, etc. It's quite dependent on the condition of the car as to what may need doing and how far you want to go. I wouldn't get too carried away with power for such an event and invest that money into well set-up suspension, wheels, tyres and spare parts.

    All new fluids and appropriate safety pieces.

    Someone has done a Targa in a polo... perhaps last year or 2014... I can't recall his name. A targa type of event is on my "to do" list.

    There's a few ppl on here who track their cars, not many having done targa events though.

    A car has just come onto the market - does anyone know this car ($10.5k silver with black wheels and mods in NSW). Perhaps it's a better option than doing similar upgrades on a cheaper car for Targa? Would prefer lower kms car though...

    Why is lower kms a factor, the engines don't generally give in easily. You'd be daft not to put a timing belt on any secondhand one you bought, with what you have in mind for it.

    Sorry it's on Carsales and I don't know how to insert a link. It's an 07 with 134,000kms, silver with black S3 rims, asking $10500.

    Your thoughts are appreciated Gavin because on the car in question it says stage one reflash yet noting parts modded (k04 etc) I would have thought needed stage 2/3 reflash?
