Speaking from experience relocating the battery to the boot is nothing but trouble. Also it would be cheaper to just get a compact battery for the original location as by law you need to have a fully sealed battery if it is mounted internally (boot included). This means you'd spend a few hundred on the relocation kit then about $400 for an Optima battery (or similar).

What about a side mount kit for the standard location (mount lengthways). Straight away you'd have an improvement but if you wanted to get a compact battery also then you would have massive amounts of room.

I agree - was looking at saving the cost, but there seems to be no way around it.

One good thing we have found is a "Pulse" brand compact battery that is working well at approx 1/2 the cost

Wha about if we fitted a large collector behind the headlight (lots of cool air comes through her as far as I am aware), pipe it in between the engine and battery into an enclsoure that housed a pod filter and adapted to the stock MAF...

Alternatvily, you could fit the collector behind the headlight and run it between the battery and the LHS guard, which may require a bit of work to miss the water washer filler, or come up with some kind of battery relocation kit which swung the battery roung 90deg as this would allow a bit more room to work with ...

Problem is both those spots are so restricted (engine / battery or battery / side) -

Guy, if you could make a side mount kit for the battery would it then give you enough room to have the inlet between the engine and the battery (basically a much larger version of what is already existing)?

Will check it out - from memory, the stock battery wont spin around due to some clearance issue (or length of battery cables)
