Polo GTI bulbs.

Anyone know what type of bulb is used?

The book doesn't mention anything, but it does say that H7 and H9 will explode if touched.

Im going to switch to HID.

The Polo GTI uses normal Halogen bulbs - H7 type for the lowbeams and H9 for highbeams, i am not sure if it's H7 or H9 for the foggies, i will have to have another look when i get a chance. Normal Wedge bulb type of the parkers.

Yes when replacing bulbs never touch the glass as, yes they can explode or in most case blow out very quickly.

There's nothing physically stopping you putting a HID kit (and ballast) in the Polo clusters, but there really are some things you should think of. Like

a) The Polo reflectors were never really designed with HIDs in mind - they'll diffuse the beam everywhere rather than focus it - like they're designed to do with Halogens. The problem with HIDs is that they'll blind everyone.

b) They'll render your car unroadworthy if the powers that be find out.

If you're set on doing this - please change the reflectors. I've been blinded too many times from other driver's aftermarket "fully sick" HIDs while driving, and it isn't pleasant. The added bonus is that you're much less likely to be pulled up by the boys in blue if they're focussed properly (with auto-levelling, too).

Never really thought of things like that.

I do alot of night time driving and find the polo's lights to be abit sluggish. Then i instantly thought HID.

Another alternative is to get higher wattage bulbs. I am pretty sure the low beam H7 bulb in the Polo is a 12V 55watt, you can get 12V 100watt ones.
But before doing that you might to check the wiring for the lights can handle the higher wattage. I have seen ones where the wiring has almost melted because of the higher wattage bulbs.

After doing alittle bit of looking around.

VW inform me that the 07 polo's come with HID bulbs. There is not change to the reflectors on the inside.

I have noted the bulb's in my polo are some of the brighest halogen's i've driven behind - have been flashed on more than 1 occassion by tard drivers in other cars - maybe i should drive at night with my lights off...??

I had HID's in an accord euro i owned previously and apart form the colour there isn't much difference brightness wise between it and the GTI...

Anyway - autospeed.com used to sell good 100w ice blue bulbs - i had some in an excel and never had any problems re: wiring.
