should be safe to drive, I believe the ECU will just make the car run as per the programming, rather than try to adapt fuelling based on the exhaust
Hi Polo tech Gurus,
At 120,000 klms my Polo GTi 9N 2008 has a Fault 16420 CEL. I scanned using VagCom.
Oxygen Lambda Sensor B1 S2 Heating Circuit P0036 - 35- 10 Malfunction / Open Circuit - intermittent
Cleared but CEL came back after about 50 klms.
I have had this Polo 8 years and done 80,000 klms. The Oxygen Lambda Sensors are original.
Is it safe to drive until fixed? Not much hope before Christmas.
Talking about fixing, what can that fix be? Where to get parts would help?
Google says it can be the Heating Circuit wiring, as well as pointing at the Oxygen Lambda Sensor B1 S2?
Just replacing the Lambda can see the CEL come back.
If I can't diy, please recommend a good VW tech in Brisbane South, Logan? Or is this a simple fix a local tech could fix?
Cheers Al

The 02 sensor itself has an integral heating circuit to keep the probes hot at an operating temp. If that is gone there is no way to fix it (unless the loom has been nicked by a stick or something) and you just need to replace the whole sensor. Short of finding a wrecking Polo in your area, ebay is your friend. The sensor plugs into a small j box which is situated about under the drivers seat on the undercarriage of the car. Remove the plastic under body cover on that side and you'll see the j box there.
yeah I think it'll be safe too. In anything other than closed loop it'll be on load based maps anyway I would have thought. Its only in cruise/idle conditions it'll run a bit turd but I wouldn't have thought that would be risky in any way. I'd get onto it quick though just for the sake of plug condition, fuel economy etc and getting a crisp commuter back.
