Sounds ok, I did get an overnight courtesy car (but they now charge $10 for it cos they reckon people were putting too many K's on them)

hey lads, is it just me or is is really weird that the first service isnt until 15,000kms?

most friends had a 1,000 service with any new cars for an oil change/general look over.

The japanese makes tend to have their 1000km service. As far as I know none of the euro makes have this.

Oh really? They just told me to fill it back up with diesel. I managed to do 70kays that day, and the needle never dropped from full. Ah...if only it didn't have that soundtrack of a truck, I think i'd be converted

Cant speak for all of em but.... Subaru (in 2003) offered an optional 1500k oil and filter change and general check over of the car. The service interval was 12500, but being a turbo they also suggested using a fuel additive at every service and half way between servicing.
Holden (in 2000) also offered an optional 1000-1500k oil and filter change and general check up. Service interval was 10000k.

VW dealers i have spoken to suggest the same thing at around 7500. but again is optional. Service interval being 15000

My last car (Holden Barina SRi) service interval was 15,000km. I don't think its a real biggy.
The advent of better oil technologies allows for longer srevice intervals on newer cars. I think that the changing of your oil every 7,500 km is good for the car, but any earlier than that(bar the initial 1000km that I got mine done at to get any swarf/manufacturing crap that MAY have been there) isn't really worth it. I know that the turbo makes a very hefty lean on oil changes(lets not forget that this turbo is water cooled too), but im sure the engineering geniuses that bought us our great car have taken that into consideration before unleashing it on a general car driving public that for the vast majority, have no idea on the upkeep and day to day maintanace of a car.
It is different for most of us on this forum as we are car enthusiasts, and lovingly look after our cars, but in MY opinion, unless you are tracking your car weekly, you can usually stick to the service intervals. I know I may cop a bit of stick on this, but don't forget, this is just MY opinion. I have done 10,000km since my initial service and have found that my oil has not changed in consistancy, smell or colour, checking the oil weekly.

on selected bmw models it is now 25,000km.. Most dealers will offer a free check and topup at 7,500 if required.

    Well said!

Since this Polo (only 8 more days) will be my first brand new car. I want to look after it the best I can.

Like you, I have total faith in engineers. But significantly less faith in dealers. 15,000k service will be fine for someone who is going to buy a new car in 5 years or less, but for someone like me who wants to keep it for a little longer, 15,000k just doesn't sit right.

I will definitely be changing the oil before 15,000k, however, I'm still unsure if I should do one at 1,000k and then another at 7,500k. Or just the one at 7,500k.

Arguments for the 1,000k service suggest it's necessary to get rid of bits of metal. Others say this is crap and that new engines are built "cleaner" so that metal bits are almost non existent. I've even read that the oil that comes with a brand new car is designed to help run in a new engine, so changing it at 1,000k is likely to disrupt the wearing in process.

Generally, most people agree that a 7,500k oil change is a good thing. It's the 1,000k change that seems to have people divided.

In regards to the 1,000km oil changes, you do what you are secure with. The main fact is that you just don't know what MAY have been left in the engine during the manufacturing process. My change was done for free, but at the end of the day, YOU are paying the big bucks for your car, and YOU are the one that is going to pay for it to be looked after.
I really hope you enjoy your Polo, as I and every other Polo driver on this forum dose. Welcome to the club.

i remember when buying my car that the dealer said something about damaging the car if you change the oil too soon. but i can't remember exactly why, but she mentioned people have experienced problems from changing their oil too early
