    Brake Pads

    Now.

Cutting to the chase. Part of my job is too know about brakes. And i knew mine were screwed so i decided to go see what VW would say about them.

I took my car to vw and gave it too them. Told them i was waiting. Said it would be 5 hours wait. (just to check the brakes)

VW informed me that i need new brake pads and complete new disks and ordered them for me without me having any say. Apparently the disks are far to warped to machine and pads have only 1000ks left in them.

So. I went back to work with the car. Took the wheel off. Took the disk off. Found out that the minimum machine depth is 22mm. I had HEAPS of rooms to machine them. VW were just full of ****. Than i looked at the pads. There stupid sensor they have on them is mounted halfway along the pad. I still have 6mm left of pad. Thats about 30 to 40 thousand k's.

Ive machined the disks and cleaned the pads and removed the sensor. The brakes are SO much better now.

Should i go back to them and abuse them? Or just leave it? I wont be going to that VW anymore tho....

EDIT: Forgot to mention ive done 47000k's already.

Unhappy Looks like I'll be driving down to the Gold Coast ...

... when I need my brakes looked at.

I dunno, Kai. I guess it depends on how angry you are with them. Personally ... I don't think they'd give a crap if you abused them. But if it makes you feel better ... why not. I think I'd probably abuse them and say something about going to the Better Business Bureau (or what ever regulating body covers such things).

    Cheers, Mate

    Sounds like standard stealer approach

However, brakes and especially brake pads are consumables like oil and filters, which I'd rather over-spend on, so I certainly be changing my pads (again) at around 50k

Yes im bringing back a old thread.

    But. I have an update!

Ive got to 63 thousand K's on the original pads. Still perfectly fine. I think so myself i have about another 10 thousand left in them. This is before i get iffy. Not before metal on metal. Thatssss ages away.

VW told me today that it was rediculous that i wasnt changing them. Then the girl was like "You're only meant to get 30000 out of them".. I lol'd.

I race my car. I track my car. I drag my car. I mountain run my car. I thrash my brakes everywhere....

And i still got 63000 out of the original pads so far?

lol .. I thought you drove it like a pussy?

there's one thing you need to keep in mind when it comes to dealerships, ...they have a tendency to go the for the easiest and most expensive option. I hear of so many cases where dealers opt for complete replacement of components and assemblies that simply weren't necessary, eg why would they machine disks when then can replace the entire assembly and charge stratosheric prices?

i would write to vw Aust!
as ppl like your dealer give vw a bad name high costs to the consumer would reduce nr of cars sold in todays competitive market.

Maybe its not the dealer but the service department though.
May need a new service manager. the mob below do too

I gave my Nissan dealer the flick as I had to tell them how to fix the roofbars, the grabhandle and how to remove stickers from prev owners PROPERLY and even how to use the phone ...their phone to ring me back on a stat wrranty issue. Took 3 hrs to screw on a nr plate...strooth mate.
Saved money by servicing car at repco servo!!! just with 1 service already half price AND
wash and wax gratis ...smooth paint and drive.
