thanks mate. spewing - the state point score came out and not happy. Because the panorama hillclimbs are getting pretty big and the numbers are capped at 95 or so cars, its becoming a situation where you need to be registered as a state competitor to guarantee yourself a spot even if you have no intention of doing the series as a whole. I can't whinge really - I did it myself so that I could do the last King Edward Park hillclimb in 2015. What it means though is that I've come away with hardly any points from the first two rounds - almost all the cars that finished ahead of me were registered for the series so even though I finished around 4th out of the state regulars I get turd points. It means i'll need to do every round all over the state so that I can run on all the tighter handling circuits if I want to be in the hunt for a good finish = time + money + grump wife etc.... bugger

When he can just keep it in second through the sections leading up to the access road he just pure left foot brakes go kart style. At an earlier round one of the guys that had a Porsche 911 RSR who he beat (I'm not kidding) asked to co drive with him to see how the hell he did it and looked pretty deflated afterwards.Attachment 28080

Did round 3 of the NSW state hillclimb championship at Huntley Dapto on Sunday. Since my Polo that usually runs in the road reg>2.5L class is dead, I instead ran in my mates Renault Clio W127 RS in the <2.5L class.
It was a bit weird driving his car since it had been power/load tuned only 2 days before the event. But It had no light load driveability and would barely idle and that coupled with a very stall-able ceramic race clutch made it a nightmare coming up to the launch zone. I put in a good first run, absolutely botched the next 2 finding a box full of neutrals on 2 of the gear changes, but did a respectable 4th run to finish 4/10ths off my mate which I was happy with.
He'd made the offer for me to double drive his car at all the events this year which I might do but I'll still work my arse off to get Polo 2.0 ready for the Ringwood event mid year. That's my best shot at getting a state win so maybe I'll do a build thread for that process. What I did learn is that Bilstein B14's a freaking sick and I'm definitely getting a set. His has 400lb springs all round and honestly only felt a shade stiffer than my H&R/B8's it was damped that well. The other thing I learnt is that I'm utterly wasting my time unless I fit an LSD. He has a torsen/helical style Quaife ATB and the drive out of the corners was amazing and that's from a diff that is considered soft with respect to tracking. I'm currently trying to find out if the KAAZ DBV 1820 plate diff will fit our box - a plate diff is what I'm hoping to build but that'll be a struggle to be ready by mid year.
I've attached some pics of some nice machinery from the event. A mugen Honda mini + a beetle with spider frame chassis, 450hp atw on 24psi. He did his quickest run when he wound it up to 26psi for the first time.Polo 9n3 Performance Tracking Thread #2-img_2639-jpgPolo 9n3 Performance Tracking Thread #2-img_2640-jpgPolo 9n3 Performance Tracking Thread #2-img_2641-jpgPolo 9n3 Performance Tracking Thread #2-img_2643-jpg

That's awersome to hear Sam. If we have time on monday you can have a blast in my red polo, it has the wavetrac diff. There's nowhere on the street you can replicate track driving, but launching it is quite impressive. The model number is 10.309.181 WK. If you can source the detailed specs on that, that may assist in your search for the KAAZ diff. If I recall correctly, my diff is also the same as what can fit the 1.4l twin charged polo GTI's. I had the box out and at the workshop, so they measured it all up and called Wavetrac to order accordingly, rather than crossing fingers. The Wavetrac arrived from the US in like 4 days.

The whole diff thing is such a hard decision. I spoke to the people up in QLD that apparently Harding performance use to do their gearbox/LSD jobs. They were saying they install SQS and Gripper diffs. They said that some of the plate/clutch diffs are quite streetable although others are appalling, and that they have cars that do more track km's than I ever would that are going strong after years and years. Apparently if you keep the gearbox oil changes up to them and use the right oil then the clutches will last just fine. Biggest question of mine regarding clutch diffs is whether 1 way or 1.5way would be the go. I can't help but think that any kind of locking of the diff on deceleration in a 1.5 way ie when trail braking to the apex, is just going to make it want to understeer more. I have heard a few FWD reviews of the 1.5 way KAAZ that say this can be a real issue. So I'm thinking that 1 way (like the SQS) would be the go but I then wonder if its locking transition from no lock to full lock at the point at which I get across onto the gas could be too abrupt right when you want to be smooth, but I'm struggling to find any info from anyone who runs a 1 way plate/clutch. You can buy the SQS 1 way with "soft" or "hard" ramps - I'm waiting to hear back from them about which is most appropriate for what I do. or how either would be compared to say the 'locking' of a wavetrac.

If you're interested in a plate alternative to the wavetrac Greg, here is the link to the SQS site: SQS Racing | LSD SQS 02J/02A/02C/02S

and here is the link to the KAAZ:
    https://www.mdspares.com.au/products...ential-DBV1820

I'm waiting on them confirming if it will actually fit. they're in VIC and the price is like 1350 or something. I think I was quoted 1600 for the wavetrac.

The diff alone was ~$1600, 9 or 11 hours labour and ~$300+ for new seals, bolts and whatever other parts to ensure it's all sweet. All up was ~$3000 and that was me pulling the box out and dropping it off.

The clutch plate diffs require a special oil in the gearbox and as Sam said, regular flushing. The wavetrac operates with standard OEM recommended oil. Be sure not to run shockproof style oil as that'll void the lifetime warranty on the diff due to the lubricant properties of shockproof. I was researching the plate diffs, but was taking too long to get a response from distributors, knew the price would be more and had the car a part... so pulled the trigger on wavetrac.

I'm finding that too. Whether its a UK shop when asking about Quaife ATB's or the wavetrac people here, they seem to know about the 113/114mm ring gear thing etc and are across the boxes. In comparison I can't find an SQS distributor in Oz (although they have been very good with email correspondence from Czech) and the KAAZ distributors in VIC seem to be referring all questions to Japan re fitment. If I'm to go to all the effort/$ then ideally I want a proper limited slip, but the way its shaping up its making the wavetrac look more and more likely.

Eddy has the sqs in his little blue girl. He loves it but I don't think the car does much mileage on public roads.

Thanks for the pricing info Sean

There are 2 main types of plate clutch diffs. The cheap version just use springs to preload the plates and it's a straight tradeoff between traction and turn in. The proper version is usually called a Salisbury and uses ramps to control the plate loading vs torque with a flatter ramp for deceleration. The sqs is a Salisbury
