After seeing this post, should i go for the major 30k km service at VW dealer or just individual service centre.

When you pulled the pollen filter out, was it dirty on both sides ? I would have expected it to be dirty on the air input side only, but mine is dirty (almost black) on both sides.

I am wondering as the dealer 'replaced' it at it's yearly service in July, I am suspicious now in that they just reversed the filter and charged me $49.00 on the service bill to replace it !

    Pollen filter

    Hi,

Some pollen filters are just a paper type filter element and some are impegnated with charcol. This is supposed to take out fumes and smells as well as dirt, dust and pollen particles. Maybe if yours is black on both sides, it is the charcol type.

I checked mine last night (MK 4 Golf) and although it was dirty, it appeared to be the charcol type...black on both sides.

I cleaned it with a vacuum cleaner and it did make a difference to the air flow through the vents.

No, I think it is of paper / fibre construction. It looks just like the photo of the filter posted by PoloGTi. Think I will get a new one & see how it discolours over the next few months.

    Holy thread revival!!

Did this yesterday, difference in airflow thru the vents is noticeable. the GTI was serviced only 4 weeks ago apparently but there was much more than 4 weeks worth of crap in the filter!

Did they charge you for it?

worksheet wasn't that detailed, but I would have though it would be an obvious thing to do, just like the air filter element.

Would anyone happen to have the photos or be able to source similar ones?

I really need to do this, as the fresh air intake on my car has the stench of leaves and other old organic matter.

    EDIT: Disregard, found a video
