I am looking at the above models to purchase for my wife. The only one I have driven had a heavy clutch down near the floor. Is this normal or does the cable need replacing?
Any known problems with this model?

I can answer my own question, today I drove another & the clutch was fine. I am taking the advice of some on this forum & also looking at Golfs. Very similar in price, lots more to choose from & seem to have higher quality trim[eg capping on top of door trim.

I finished up buying an '01 polo which is the model I prefer, nice looking, galv panels, higher quality panel fit,16V & in our budget. The first thing I found out from the local wrecker is that the oil leaks around the selector shaft in the gearbox, oil is not topped up & is one cause of gearbox failure.
I noticed mine had a slight leak before I bought it & didn't worry too much about it at the time. My wife suggested I should look at the level which turned out to be a drama. The last person to check this was hamfisted & did the plug so tight I needed an impact wrench to loosen it,GRRRR.
The selector shaft looked good from the RHS so I ordered the new seal, & before taping the shaft to protect it I noticed on the LHS the shaft was damaged. Unfortunately, although the rest of the car is excellent I am too late from saving that part from the butchers. All I could do was to carefully tidy up the shaft with a diamond lap & some fine wet&dry paper. I had to make up a special tool to press the new seal in.[if anyone is interested I can post a pic]
I am surprised that VW did not use a hardened shaft to avoid this happening because to replace it is a gearbox out & dismantle job $$$$
The spares guy said they sell lots of these seals so it must be a common problem.
Next time I will try a couple of speedy sleeves over the shaft to protect it from any further damage when the seal is replaced next time.
