the only suggestion i can give to you is - lightweight. take parts that you don't need off the car put, lightweight alloys, take out the backseats. Putting a pod filter would slow the car down (as the 2nd person reply back here) YES i would totally agree with him on this one.

I've driven the polo match for a day (manual), its quite zippy car (i forgot whether it was the 1.4 or 1.6).

You are right, he may not have had a choice in how much to spend. However I don't understand the surprise in his post about how slow the 1.4 is. To be honest, it sounded like he bought it thinking he'd get a bargain performance car out of it, rather then thats the most he could afford. Maybe I'm wrong, it's just the way I read it.

Buy that smashed GTi from pickles and swap the 1.8T into your Match.

Probably more money/hassle then selling the 1.4 and buying a GTi but hey, its an option.

These threads remind me of LS1.com.au. Whenever someone asks how to get more power out of their V6, the response is always buy a V8 regardless of the financial and legal restrictions placed upon the driver.

like someone already said check out the uk polo site 1.4s are popular up there due to regs on pollution, I guess it will be cams and other internal works you can do but all will proably cost big bucks and none are particularly DIY friendly.
Could just get your handling tip top so you can hold whatever speed you have through corners.
Or just go the slow and low, resided yourself to having a slow car that can shave the hairs off an ants back.

    And we have a winner

I only have a fairly stock GTI, RSB's and strut brace yet I just beat, R32's, Golf GTI's and Megane F1's at Oran Park EPCC round.

Forget power, just go all out handling mods and weight reduction. If you are motorsport inclined you could give lots of competitors a dust up on a hill climb circuit.

Unless you throw some real money at it, you wont see great benefits in the Polo 1.4.

Enjoy the car for what it is. I think there would be some slight gains with the usual intake exhaust route but im not sure if it will be enough to justify the spend.

I think wheels and suspension is the better place to spend.. Come buy my GTI wheels I have and you will be half way there.

I drove a 1.4 auto Polo today at work - To be honest it ain't all that bad, not that i was giving it a hiding or anything.

    Neat for a city runner.

To put it into perspective, we do alot of BMW servicing and the 316i compact and 520i.... THOSE are slow. Stick with the Polo, make it look cool, handle well, and it'll teach you how to drive smooth and fast. Grunt ain't everything.

I'd say go with handling, it means you won't need to build up pace so often.

In heavy rain along the black spur a 1.6L Mk4 with KW v3's coilovers, upgraded swaybars and phat rubber was about even with a completely stock Polo GTI. He could take the corners and I just reeled him back in on the straights.

Of course a GTI with coilovers or a half decent spring/shock setup will change this significantly.

yeh i've already wacked some 18's on it and some eibach race springs.

but i suppose i'll have to just save up for a real car
