Options for getting aux input without replacing head unit

    Hey,

I have an 07 GTI. I'm pretty pissed though most cars these days have been coming with an aux input so you can plug in your mp3 player but my car doesnt have one.

I have an FM transmitter but quality is terrible and so I wish I could have an aux input as well.

I know I can go and buy an aftermarket cd player that has an aux input but I really like the factory cd player and head unit because it gels with the rest of the car and looks nice so I dont really want to replace it.

I know you can get an ipod adaptor for my car fitted when buying it but I dont know if I can still get the fitted now 2 years later?? Even then it looks like it might only connect to the ipod port and its not a 3.5mm line in adaptor?? As I just have an mp3 player so need the 3.5mm stereo input

Are there any options for being able to wire in an aux input or something or any other alternative so I can get an aux but not have to replace the factory cd player?

    Thanks!

You could try something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/MP3-Xcarlink-for...27191005r27246

PS. I don't have one, so not sure how well they work.

what sort of FM transmitter do you use? I use a Griffin iTrip and find that the quality is really good....as long as you:

    a) Don't go under power lines.
    b) Keep the 'station' you use away from other actual stations (eg don't use 94.4 if there's a station at 94.5fm).
    c) sit it in a position that works for your car (closest to the ariel is best but not really suitable for a polo).

I sit my iPod in my pop-out cup holder! Works really well!!!

Yeah cheers for that! I dont have an ipod, have a PMP and only option is output via 3.5mm stereo jack so the Griffin is out.. I bought an fm transmitter off ebay and it was a cheap one though so I know you get what you pay for but I didnt think there was much complicated electronics to them so I didnt think a $10 one or a $60 would be much different. It's just that the reception was awful on them.

Thanks for the link to the usb/cd/line in deal I think that might work actually Ive seen similar around as well and it appears yes I can plug it into the cd changer port on the cd player.. I just know jack about radios so I dont even know how to take them out but maybe you can get this sort of thing at like Brisbane car sound or something and get them to fit it??

I you have a look at the radio there's 4 flat slots around the outside. You insert keys (available to borrow at your friendly VW dealer) into the slots and the radio pops out. Plug the cable for the adaptor into the back and bob's your uncle.

If you're in Brisbane, I have a set of these keys you can borrow if needs be.

Really? Mine doesn't. Perhaps you are mistaken.
    From the website

Now turn up the volume and let the 8-speaker
CD/MP3 compatible sound system surround you with your
    favourite music.
