The oil spec in the PD diesel IS critical as the cam lobes that are used to pressurise the fuel to each injector wear out prematurely if the wrong oil is used - actually they wore out even with the correct 505.01 oil. This led to a bunch of people sending oil samples away in the USA to Blackstone to be analysed throughout each oil change lifetime and some guys started running Mobil 1 Delvac ESP 5W40 with excellent success and results better compared to any of the guys running 505.01 oils.

Better to put this topic into the general forum for lubricants, then. There are far more PD engines in golfs than polos.

And that oil is 5W30 which is not specified for the 1.9TDI PD engine. It requires 5W40.
The improvements in oil technology (particularly shear) from when 505.01 was issued and when 507 was issued means that the previous requirement for 5W40 is redundant ie; an approved (for 507) 5W30 exceeds the requirements for an approved (in 2004 for 505.01 ) 5W40 in regards to high load viscosity. Keeping in mind that the W40 versus W30 rating is a temperature rating not a load rating.

I found out that VW only specified 507.00 for LongLife PR code vehicles. I have decided to run 505.01 for the next 5000km and will then switch to Mobil Delvac ESP 5W40.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

That's true, but that's because non Long Life PR code vehicles don't need 507. It's like not using Pump98 because VW specifies Pump95.
