Oil Filter - Polo GTI

Gday,

Had a question regarding the oil filter. Was going to do an oil change through a mechanic at 7500km and I am sweet with the oil I need to use (Castrol Edge 0W-40 - someone tell me if I am wrong).

However, with the filters, I need to know:

1. What brand should I use? Or should I get it straight from VW?
2. What is the model number?

Also, anyone changed the oil filter themselves on the GTI? Is it a difficult job? Will most likely get someone to do it just to cover my ass, but I am curious to know!

Well regardless of how simple the job is, anything not done by a mechanic (even as simple as an oil change) where it is part of the recommended servicing will void the warranty.

Think twice before you throw it away just for oil changes. If the Stealership is too pricy, just get ultratune or someone to do it.

This is a furphy, there is no obligation to use a genuine filter, VW or any other vehicle manufacturer cannot void a warranty just because you did not fit a genuine filter. If however you fitted a non genuine filter and it could be demonstrated that an engine failure was a direct result of the non genuine filter they would have grounds to void your warranty.

Having said that, it makes no sense to do your own servicing on a new car, a recorded service history by qualified personnel makes a lot of sense from the point of view of resale.

I mean if you do the work yourself and the crank snaps in half they will blame it on an incorrect oil change. Even if you did it properly they'll stick to their guns saying "He wasn't qualified hence there is zero chance it was done right."

They might try that but I think it very unlikely, they would have to prove the relationship between the work carried out and the failure.
