This is a furphy, there is no obligation to use a genuine filter, VW or any other vehicle manufacturer cannot void a warranty just because you did not fit a genuine filter. If however you fitted a non genuine filter and it could be demonstrated that an engine failure was a direct result of the non genuine filter they would have grounds to void your warranty.
Having said that, it makes no sense to do your own servicing on a new car, a recorded service history by qualified personnel makes a lot of sense from the point of view of resale.
