oh wise ones educate me please!! wanting a Polo GTI of my own :)

on the advice of FL00DY i accidently posted this in another thread - suggestion was to make my own thread so here it is!

    Hey people

have been lurking on these forums for a while reading everyones opinions and thoughts on their Polo GTIs and after secretly wanting one i have approached the parentals and i definately am getting one within the next 6-8months.

is there any advice you can give me about this car? It'l be my first sports car lol currently im driving a 02 Barina which i love to bits but i want something with a lot more power, actually a lot more power!!

ive rung around for quotes on servicing and drive away packages and so far in my area liverpool seems to be the cheapest.. also any advice on full comp insurance (il be 23 when i get the car hopefully, *fingers crossed*)

any wise words you can give me would be greatly appreciated about anything to do with the car and keeping it in absolute mint condition

im half way through my savings goal and would possibly trade in my barina. im not sure how much id get for a trade, id rather sell it private but i duno what my luck would be like (its in awesome condition, 62,000km).. any ideas? ive checked out redbook and the figures seem okay for private sale but im iffy about trade in.

    what are your opinions?

    Thanks in advance
    MissVuks

Hi Missvuks - Welcome to the forums..

I definently wouldn't trade in the Barina to a dealer! - They'll practically steal it off you. And agreed on the power issues - My exgf has one and they are fairly well built but don't go anywhere

Great choice on a polo - Gotta respect a girl (right? ) for having good taste!

My brother bought his Golf GTI from the dealer in Liverpool (I'm from Casula) and got a great deal but I went in there about a year ago and the salesman offered me $11,000 for my A3 (Way less than half market value at the time).

Goodluck with your search, and make sure you budget $1500 ontop of the car for a chip! (Adds ~40kw - About what the Barina has in total )

A barina would be quite easier to sell as its fairly cheap on fuel usage. So, i would definitely sell privately.
A month or two ago, VW was doing a 26990 driveaway for the polo gti (correct me if i am wrong). so you can prob aim to do that if not better.
i am 20 and paying 800-ish insurance (not under my name)
service wise, go to seb at european auto.

You'll ALWAYS get screwed on a trade in. You're paying the couple of thousand less they will give you for the convenience of them taking it off your hands and giving you a new car at the same time.

And unfortunately the condition of the car is not that important to them - it doesn't affect the price they will give you that much.

If your car is in exeptional condition sell it privately. Just do your research and accept that it is a pain in the arse.

Who are you with for insurance? I checked all major companies (AAMI, NRMA, GIO) and none of them insure this car for under 25 yo. You might be able to insure it under someone else's name (eg. your parents) but if you're involved in an accident and you were driving, they don't cover you?

yea itd be under my dads name - nrma quoted me roughly 2k. which is okay considering my mate is paying 1800 for a stock corolla and shes 21.

im pretty sure id still be covered if im in an accident, hence why the premium is abit steep..

Welcome to the forum....^^^^and what they said

My main piece of advice is to be patient when selling privately. Time is actually your friend, and will help you get the price you want.

Hopefully, your parents can help you with the Pogo purchase...and the insurance. I'm an ol' fart an pay bugger all!

paitence is a virtue. the barina is a good first chicklet car, im sure i wont have problems selling it too some of the little daddy's girls in my area.

hmm the parents wont be helping me at all, tis alllllllll my own evil doing now that ive graduated from uni.. only possibly having insurance under their name but im paying for everything as it is now so its sorted i hope

It's under purely my parents name. I told them that i am an occasional driver and they said that i can either put my name and pay a higher premium, or not n pay a higher excess. thats what the lady on the phone told me.

    Hey MissVuks,

Deal with Wally at the Liverpool dealership. I live out your way too and of all the people i spoke with at this place, Wally was a standout and will go out of his way to make sure you are happy about the whole deal.

PM me if your interested and i will give you a little more info and some things to be wary of thats probably relevant to all dealerships.

If you havnt done so already, go take one for a test drive.
