    Noise

    Hi,
Wondering if anyone may know where a noise that I have noticed on our `00 Polo 16V is coming from.
It sounds like a rattle/whining noise that goes when I press the clutch pedal. There is no noise from the gears whilst driving, you just notice it if the engine is idling in neutral.
    Cheers,
    Graham.

I had that on my Civic. I think it's something to do with a loose belt.

This may be the sound of the Spigot Bearing rotating when the clutch is depressed. This bearing is located in the center of the flywheel and allows the input shaft of the transmission to rotate freely when the clutch is depressed. This bearing is just a Plain Bearing(non roller type), and may make some noise in older cars. It always pays to have it replaced when you have the clutch replaced, or if the transmission is pulled out for any reason. Other than that, it may just be the throw out bearing(not sure if they have these in those cars...My 2004 Barina had a hydraulic type throw out bearing..IE, no fork..., may be the same here...any confirmation??).

Yeah sounds like your clutch release bearing, you dont have a spigot bearing on transverse engine set ups , but do on the inline set ups, this is what you have to remove when putting an Audi engine into a VW (inline to transverse)
If your are still under warranty thats an item they would cover.

Nah, not under warranty, it`s a 2000 model, just clocked over 100,000km.
So there are not normally ant nasty problems with the actual gearbox bearings? Like I said, it`s not noisy when driving.
    Cheers

Nothing to worry about in the short term. Mention it when it's time for a new clutch.

sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i've got the same thing with my 08' Polo GTI. just clocked 1200 km's and its started to have noise similar to described.
Noise is not whiny, but more like a rough moving cogs when car is in neutral, like in previous post, noise disappears when gears are disengaged (clutch in).

Someone even asked whether it was a diesel!!!

Any suggestions or help? am i just being paranoid, cos its never happened in any other cars i've driven?

I have had the same noise since new, and it hasn't changed for the worse(I hardly notice it now). A mate of mine has the same noise on his MK4 Golf GTI.

I'm not too worried about it, but its up to you.
