    Yawn - how dull.

Looks like an Astra/Vectra/You Name it boring Euro hatch.

    The donk will be safe/boring.

    So will the transmission.

    And the suspension.

Why can't ANYONE be a bit daring these days????????

    Must EVERYTHING be safe?????

I disagree that it looks like other makes of vehicle. If anything it shares similarities with the new golf, which i'm sure all the VW's fleet will in the next few years. Volkswagen are aimed for (designed and styled) to meet a wide range of peoples tastes. I don't believe they design and make cars to be daring, I believe they make them to appeal to a wide variety of people(which they do!!!). (and to make a profit) I think there styling has always been a simple and clean is best, which is shown in the new polo design.

    That's right - that's the problem.

Can't someone somehwere (VW, Mazda, Mitsubishi, wherever....) come up with a small hatch that DOESNT try to appeal to everyone???

Gee, I remember Mazda set out to do an open top sports car when NO-ONE was going near this sort of thing. And 20 years on......

Why can't designers be DARING anymore????????

so you want them to do a car with limited appeal - and lots of daring - whats the use if they sell only 100 of those a month worldwide - in fact with the current polo's in south africa alone they sell around 2000+ (at one stage around two years ago that was 3500+ per month) polo's in total if you take every variation - so making this limited appeal model will jeapordise some mind boggling sales figures worldwide

its not worth the research and development and tooling costs it takes for a modern car to try and reinvent the wheel - the conventional stuff sells by the bucketloads merely because the car seems safe and economical and practical and thats what a small car is supposed to be ie boring and basic transport from place A to place B - cars like the EOS or the bluesport roadster are for the guys who want exciting cars - be thankful that theres a semi exciting version like the GTI that allows you to stand out from the kia's and hyundais and daihatsus and all the other variations of small unexciting boring cars out there

besides you cant expect lamborghini and ferrari type styling for the amounts you spend on a polo

I dunno - call me stupid - but I just sense that there is a BIG market out there for a hot hatch with heaps of verve, guts, individuality, character and soul.

Not some cookie-cutter job that makes everyone feel warm that conformity goes on ad-nauseum.

    P.S I can't stand modern lambo's and forza's - BORING!!!!!

Check out the 80's Countach or the F40. THAT was style!!!!

Mazda seem to be pretty happy with MX5 sales. There was no market for this car 20 years ago. It didn't exsist. They made the market by being bold and having a great car.

Why can't someone re-invent the Hot Hatch??? (why not VW?)

You know - Great handling (not adequate or safe), brilliant gearbox (hard for VW, I know first hand.....), enough grunt (110KW - fine by me in the right chassis), classic looks (just start with a fresh page - don't copy everything else!!!!), few bells and whistles!!! (ESP - forget it. Airbags - only if the law says I must. Power steering - just make the steering right in the first place!)

They were bold to initially build it... the styling was derivative of a 60's Lotus so hardly ground breaking in that regard.

Mazda have played it extremely safe since the first MX5 was built... and has seen dwindling sales and no appreciable improvement in performance in 20yrs (bar the local MX5 SP).

How about you go buy a Renault R26?

Your requirements are quite narrow (if you really examine them) and don't really fit the "hot hatch" genre. Hot Hatch = boring hatch that been hotted up! Not a car specifically styled and engineered as a stand alone model.

The great hot hatches of all time are barely distinquishable from the models they are derived from. (Pug 205 GTi, 306 GTi6, Golf Gti, Civic VTi-R/type R, Nissan Pulsar SSS etc)

Called a couple of VW dealers & VW customer service in Sydney. No one's heard anything of a release date in Aus yet.

Some said they usually hear about it a couple of months before they get here, others say it could happen just like that....so who knows...

Still waiting on an email from VW, but they'll probably say the same thing.

and how long before every other manufacturer copies that - and "exciting" becomes the new "boring" - you wont win - too many people are out to make money here - you just have to decide what you want the car for - if you want safe reliable transport - 70% of them will do adequately if not brilliantly and everyone is gonna copy the best parts of everyone elses models - so its all gonna seem like a much of a muchness - even when one gets a bit ahead of the pack - i give it three months before someone else catches up

in the meantime id prefer if VW is still around to maintain my vehicle whilst i still have it thanks - SEAT left South Africa recently and already parts is a hectic mess - i know of people who have had accidents who are going to land up having to write cars off if they cant find the right parts from Spain - so for now if VW follows the safe route - its fine by me - ive seen what happens with the stuff that gets exciting and doesnt follow the norm for example the SEAT LEON CUPRA - its a brilliant little car - and i was lusting to replace my polo with one - thank god i resisted the urge cos three months later they packed their bags and were off on their merry way leaving many people here in the lurch despite the promises of having parts for 10 years - they are struggling already - have an accident here with one of those - you better have terrific insurance
