Gotta say I like the look of this! Looks much chunkier than the current Polo and I like the squarer, more muscular rear lights too.

Am I reading this correctly? -- I really do love this new Polo, but if they're talking $35,000 - $39,000 for it, then I think they're going to be disappointed with sales. The lure of the Polo GTI is in its price/performance. For these sort of dollars, I'm looking elsewhere; and not necessarily it's bigger brother.

    Thumbs up

Not sure if I should buy a brand new 2008 after seeing this, though I will have to say, if this car is $34k+, then maybe not. Though, with an APR remap, this car will be in the vicinity of it's much faster rivals.

Credit is due to it's great style, more of an aggressive stance, increased power are all fantastic, though I really do prefer manual. Yes, DSG is faster shifting etc, but at the end of the day for me, a car is more fun to drive when it's manual, and it also comes down to purpose. I've read most DSG vs Manual threads in relation to the Golf GTI, and I must say, most buyers who went DSG enjoyed it at first, but became increasingly bored after a few months. It may be the future, but well always hold onto
    a manual version!

I'll ring VW today and see what's going on here, haha - god forbid I place down a deposit lol.

I wouldn't read too much into that. Unlike MINI, VW has to fit the Polo into a model range, and it needs price points that avoid cannibalisation of, for example in this case, the Golf GTI. The UK Polo GTI base mentioned is close to the $A price of the current base model here. That said, you can be sure there will be a high spec model (leather, nav, sunroof etc etc) which will sit just below the base Golf GTI. This is a great car for VW/dealers, because it is a high margin model, and allows them to run a 'bait and switch' tactic with prospective buyers of the Golf GTI

Yeah - I already worked out in another thread that the Polo GTI pictured, even if it comes in at $26990, by the time you add the DSG ($2500), Sunroof ($1900), Xenon w/ DRL ($2000), PDC ($500) it comes up to $33,890 for the car pictured (not including any interior options like the sat nav etc). Add your dealer delivery, onroads and taxes, and you'd be looking at around $37,750. This is still far below the Mini Cooper S though.

Despite my post above, I thought it is worth quoting you and highlighting a different section of the Carsales quote. Basically, Carsales are making an assumption based on the fact that the performance is better than a Mini Cooper S.... you know what happens when you assume

As Timbo said, VW could NOT price the Polo GTI around $39,990, because the Golf GTI is already priced at $38,990.

Nice, PT, Qikas, though the massive wheels just scream rough ride to me, so i'll stick with 17s personally.

The price will need to be around 26k (5dr, satnav/ipod, manual, headlights as pictured) for me to consider it...hehe looking like a hard task, so the '09 Polo may have some life left.

It's still got plenty of life left, we just have to burn more petrol compared to the new one!
