Welcome to the forum! I saw that car on Trademe...good score. Did they really only make 200 of the cup model? Seems there are no shortage of the more regular GTIs coming in from Japan. So what's your first mod?!

There was another cup edition on trademe in the south island, this one was listed on trademe, but not as a cup edition

See I'm not sure whether it was 200 per region or 200 overall... steering wheel only says 10/200

Haha, first mod I did was replace the japanese double din headunit out as it was busted and disconnect a bunch of the japanese toll road stuff... Probably going to work on getting a pod filter into the airbox for some turbo whooshy noises, haha.

    Awesome find!
    Great looking machine.

Which city are you in; I'm in Auckland?
Just done an exhaust 2.5" on my 2007 GTI Polo. WOWOOOWOW! Such a MASSIVE difference!
Really looking forward to a re-program of the ECU.

What other mods are you considering?

    I'm in Auckland too

With this car I'm not gonna go too crazy with modding, most I'll probably do is an ECU flash, some coilovers one day, and a not that loud exhaust... My last car was too bumpy, too loud and the tyres I kept on buying never lasted very long hahaha

Where is the best place for an ECU flash in auckland and what program do they flash?

There are a few options with flashing; one is guy called Basil from Christchurch (though he comes to Auckland regularly). The next is Robin from Torque Performance in Rosebank Road, Avondale. Another company, also out West, also retails parts, can't remember the name, sorry.
As for which program, ask them, as I'm not sure what is used / available.
The exhaust is a touchy subject; totally agree about the droning, noisy 'ricer' type exhausts; I've also just moved from 'that' kind of car. After researching, and matching the components, mine has added a SMALL amount of extra noise inside. But the POWER delivery. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWESOME! Loads of lower and midrange improvement.

Which part of Auckland are you in?

New Plymouth based black 5 door GTI owner here. I would highly recommend you look up Gavin (h100vw) and talk to him about CustomCode tuning. He sorted me out with a phase 2 tune on my ECU while I was on a recent trip to Aus. But he's happy to work via the postal service. Well proven and respected tunes, good value, great support and awesome end result. I went phase 2 as it makes the most of the exhaust work I've done and should cater well for future intake mods.

What did you do for exhaust? I went with a 2.5" Milltek decat downpipe and 2.25" Remus rear section/muffler. I'd be happy with it if I was in my 20's, but for a middle aged bugger like me, it's a bit too loud, and attracts undesired attention when heavily massaging the right pedal... So I'll probably sort out a stainless centre section, probably 2.5" and add in a resonator to dial back the dBs a little - hopefully that will have the desired result. My particular car didn't come with a centre resonator, while some did apparently. Another good reason for a tune is that some of them code out the check engine light which you'll probably get if you remove the cat.

I'm in Te Atatu but regularly travel out to Drury where my partner lives. What about you? I'd be keen to check out your exhaust note My last car (which I am still yet to sell) has one of those mufflers where when you mash your right foot a valve opens in the muffler and it gets, uh, extremely loud. It being an Altezza ... yeah ... its very loud.

I researched the options and went for some locally fabricated AdrenalinR products.
A resonator and the largest muffler possible in 2.5", left the standard down pipe and cats in place. Also found an almost EXACT twin tip that looks identical to the standard one originally on the car.
its still quiet, yet allows for heaps of extra low down grunt. So far no one has noticed anything, either looks or sound wise; and my flatmate was the first to say something about my old cars exhaust.
