    my car audio setup

heres a link for the people who dont visit the audio section of this site

    http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=20956

have a look and let me know what you think besides for the obvious "its overkill for a little Polo" or "where the grocery going to fit" comments

Whether it's overkill or not, that's an amazing set up, the sound must be totally mind-blowing. It seems your approach to audio is the same as Flap's approach to performance - you're both never satisfied

Personally, I'm not into full-on audio for performance cars, rather listen to the engine and exhaust scream at me, that's music to my ears In top-of-the-line Ferraris, Porsches etc the car manufacturers virtually remove the sound system completely because, well, ...when you've got that sort of performance, listening to music becomes redundant

I've been there, won SQ and removed it all bar the speakers and HU. It's not practical and regardless of whatever happens, road noise still get to you no matter how much Dynamat or sound deading or anti-vibration foam you have (which all 3 I've got in my car). My opinion is spend your money on the go fast bits.

Nicely done, just that why you're not running on active crossover?

Here's my setup on previous ride:

    - Alpine 7998R
    - Dyns MD130 tweets
    - Scanspeak 5.5" midwoofer
    - TRU T4.75 4 channel amp (running active)
    - Monster cable all around
    - No Sub yet! haha

I find this decent but tweets and mid dont match

i will be for the most part - the beauty of the Pheonix Gold amps is that they feature a 24db/octave onboard crossover - and they frequency selection is not left to guesswork - the trimpots have notches (detents) which allows you to select exact frequencies - so 10 turns out of 41 will give e for example a 51hz lowpass on the monoblock to cross over the sub at 24db/oct (most conventional crossovers are 12db/oct and only high end or digital crossovers will give you this amount of flexibility) then the midbass is going to be low passed somewhere in the 400hz region (active from the onboard crossover) and then the passive crossover will be high passed at around 400hz so the mid gets from 400hz and then passively crossed to form a bandpass between that 400hz and 2400hz - and then the tweeter takes over at 2400hz and plays till the upper limit of the speaker - so its a mixture of active and passive crossing over without really needing another external unit which could potentially add noise and complexity (its complicated enough as is )

your system config sounds like it has loads of potential - and i reckon that the mids and tweeters could work better than you would think possible - just use the onboard EQ on that 7998R and play around with the phase of thespeakers - i have my driver side mid out of phase - and that improves things by a bunch - identical settings might not work for you - so try inverting the phase on everything one speaker at a time ie try inverting both tweeters - then one tweeter - then one mid etc etc etc and see what improves things

about rather spending on the go fast bits - i have nowhere to drive really fast on our poor roads - so no use making the car too much faster than it already is - i will do the obligatory ecu remap to regain a bit of performance lost due to the weight gain from the system - but not too much more since here in South Africa its pointless - there are no tracks in my area - and i hate illegal drag racing cos the guys who do it here are generally a retarded bunch with no idea of safety who basically have no idea how to drive a fast car anyway - so i stay very far away from them

so yeah a bit of cash on the audio system wont go amiss instead of wasting it on performance mods that i would use even less than the audio system - so its a case of horses for courses

That's crazy.... very neat and the sound quality would be amazing!

I had a Clarion DXZ835MP headunit, Focal KP2s splits off an Audison 2CH amp and 2 Orion 10" subs off an Eclipse monoblock in my old Lancer -- I was going to move it over into my GTI with a few upgrades, but I'm really just enjoying my car for what she is. I no longer have the passion for car audio as I once did.

LOL - actually ..... it can get pretty loud but its not normally set up to be - its set up very much for sound quality - its all set to not clip or distort in any form or manner and the sub is adjustable - but it doesnt get played loud too much - only if im demoing it to someone who asks "where is the bass"

i prefer the sound to be more like a live band playing in front of you - which is why im replacing the huge JBL sub with the smaller but much higher quality Morel

normally the bass is only loud enough for you to hear the details you were supposed to hear ie a little of the impact of kick drums and lots of detail in bass guitars and Cello's - but they sound more woody and warm instead of being a huge mush of sound just coming from the back ...... in fact when its set for SQ you dont even notice any sound in the back - it projects forward and quite high ie at eye level so it seems like vocalists are situated just more or less under the rear view mirror and drummers are at the base of the dash where it meets the windshield

the soundstage isnt as wide as id like but im going to try a few things to get it back as wide as i used to have it previously with my tweeters on-axis but using the EQ to combat any brightness - will discuss these attempts further if they work though

but I'm really just enjoying my car for what she is. I no longer have the passion for car audio as I once did.
you will go through phases where once the novelty of the performance wears off and driving becomes another chore it will soon get boring without the system - if i had your equipment id still be using it - some great stuff there - focal, audison, eclipse, clarion etc - should sound very nice
