    mounting a 1 DIN radio in the bottom half...

    Got myself a 1DIN Pioneer DEH-P65BT bluetooth head unit with adjustable display/button colour to match the stock interior and just waiting for the CANBUS harness, aerial adaptor booster harness and radio removal tools to arrive from the US and A before the install (gotta love this forum, you know exactly what you need before you even start taking anything apart, thanks guys )

    Before I get to take the RCD200 out and have a peek inside, I'm just wondering if any of you guys who've cahnged the head unit could tell me whether a "cage" from a Pioneer unit (or any other Jap brand for that matter) would be a straight fit ie just a matter of bending out the tabs and sticking it in - from the photos you've posted before it just looks like there's just empty space inside with no "wall" the tabs can grab on to. Do you need additional brackets?

    Also I intend to mount the unit in the bottom half of the hole so as to leave space for a boost/oil pressure gauges in the top half in the future (to be filled by a cheap cubby hole in the mean time), but it looks like the hole for the radio mount at the back of the unit (bolt with a rubber plug) is actually at the top half of the 2DIN hole?

    Firstly, have you got the 'keys' which unlock the RCD200 from the centre dash in your possession yet? If not, you can simply use 4 Kenwood headunit removal clips to do the job (saves you some money).

    There is a support for the headunit which I strongly recommend you purchase as the weight of the headunit may not be sufficiently held in by the cage. The headunit support can be sourced from the previous two 9N series models. To make your life easier as you have decided to put gauges in, you can also purchase a din blank (once again a geniune factory part). You can drill your 52mm hole's into them at where you find appropriate, and at least you wont have fitting issues with the Japanese din being smaller than the Euro din (Japanese din is about 2~3mm's smaller each side); not to mention you'll also have to custom retrofit a mount.

    I havent got a scanner but the two parts I mentioned are from VW's 'ETKA', Illustration '857-10'. The headunit support is part '11' and the din blank is '10' on the diagram.

    Yep have already ordered a "master set" of various removal keys so I could work on other cars too, but it's taking its time to get here from the US.

    Mmm all these genuine VW parts - where would you source them in Oz, I imagine they'd be expensive to get from a VW dealer?

    As for a DIN blank - as I intend to use NewSouth gauges for the stock appearance I'll probably get the DIN sized mount too that's designed to fit the Mk4 Golf - that's likely to be Euro DIN sized, says on the site it just clips into the dash of the Golf, not sure if it'll do the same in the Polo and not sure whether it'll bear the weight of the gauges either.

    Hey man, sorry to hijack, but whats this about the CANBUS harness? I am looking to add an Alpine double DIN touch screen DVD player to my Polo, and I wasn't aware you needed this for the system. How much am I looking to pay to get one, and is it necessary to add? What other ancillaries will I need to look at adding to the cost? Cheers for that.

    You can do what I did - buy a quadlock harness. They're readily available off eBay for $11 shipped (thats how much I paid for mine), and it saves you the confusion of converting the generic harness wiring to the inconventional VW quadlock harness.

    Shaneth just got prices for the single DIN pocket and the supporting mount for me. Send him a PM and he can give you that info. My circumstances changed slightly, so I won't be installing my stereo for now.

    Mmm I count several eBay vendor flogging these harnesses atm...

    Try looking up '02 VW radio harness or words along those lines - the vendor I bought mine off is the slowest I've dealt with from the US, it's been 3 weeks and I still haven't got the goods.

    Just to summarise, this is what i know you'd need so far:

    1. A harness/adaptor that plugs into your existing lead that goes into the stock unit, and splits it into the standardised colour coding cables for speakers, power input (ground, ACC, permanent positive), antenna power (to power up the antenna booster or to give signal to an old-skool telescopic unit to raise or lower), and signal to the amp.
    2. An antenna harness adaptor with booster circuit that hooks up the stock antenna cable to the standard antenna socket of your after market unit, this includes a blue-white wire that hooks up to he antenna wire of the above-mentiond harness
    3. Radio removal tools to take out the RCD200, or jigsaw blades, fat screwdriver if you don't care about the stock unit.

    As for what I'd need to physically mount the unit into the dash, I won't know until I get the keys to take the stock unit out of the dash and have a look inside.

    Aerpro make an antenna adaptor for the Polo's (or the new generation Euro's). They're about $15 and are available from a variety of places - ie, SuperCheap, JB Hi-Fi, etc.

    All the factory parts I mentioned - the din blank and the headunit support can be purchased basically through where you purchased your vehicle's service department. A genuine factory din dubby box slot costs $82 (VW Order number: 6Q0.857.058.A.1QB), and the rubber insert that goes inside is $15.35(VW Order Number: 6Q0.858.167.A.9B9). Unfortunately, I cant help you out with the other parts on their specific order numbers.

    Roodosutaa - here is a photo of the RCD200 removed (taken when I was fitting my JVC AVX2 in). Hope that gives you an idea of what you're dealing with. Basically, it's just two long slats that act as the support - thus I say the requirement for the headunit support as it'll sit in between the cut-out groove (that divides the two din's).



    Blitzen, go onto eBay and also try the buy it now options. When I purchased mine - there were several from the States and also UK (mine was sent from the UK and ended up here in 4 days), which was really impressive. Hope you can find one soon as it minimises headaches drastically

    $82 for a bit of genuine VW plastic you gotta be kidding me though...
