    motor oil

just changed to castrol edge 5w30. replacing nulon 5w30.
    not happy.
i reckon the old nulon was better that the fresh castrol.
the idle seems rougher, the engine doesnt rev as cleanly and (depending on traffic conditions on my regular routes) i think my fuel consumption has gone a little worse.

im thinking i'll give royal royal purple a shot next time. they have good reviews, but not sure abotu using it in a small turbo engine. the yanks rave about it in their big bloody v8's and its very popular in racing circles.

    what are others using?

I have previously used Castrol Edge 5w30 with good results. Been using Valvoline Syn 1 for last 2 changes. Going back to Edge 5w30 as I had 30% off. Mobil 1 I like - but 4litre bottle sucks.

I would love to try motul - but too dear...

I've always used Castrol Edge in my cars, 5w-30 in my turbo cars in particular (Polo GTI and my WRX). I always had great results.

I wouldn't imagine the oil would affect the idle as much as described, I'd more likely put it down to fuel... or perhaps you bumped a sensor somewhere in the process.

That said, did you bring the old oil up to temperature before draining it? Some oils don't play nice when there are significant amounts of residue of the previous oil brand in the motor.

yeah i got the temperature up before i drained it.
the idle isnt actually rough, i may have exaggerated a little . its just that it was smoother with nulon oil.

Could just be taking it's time to coat the components properly seeing it's just been changed.

I'd re-check the oil levels in a day or two, and then see if the idle has improved in that time.

Hey. Just getting quotes for a 2nd year service & can get the Castrol Edge Sport 5W/30 for the same price as the Castrol Fully Synthetic 5W/30.

Which one would you go for? I take it the fully synthetic is preferred as it's worth more. This is also the type VW use (though they quoted over $200 more for the service, so not going through them).

Edit..........Just looked them up. They're the same oil! - Castrol Edge Sport 5W/30 is the fully synthetic type.....I was given the impression there's a semi-synthetic & fully synthetic...

So I guess I can't go wrong with the Edge Sport 5W/30??

i may be wrong but i think castrol magnetic is a semi synthetic.
but thats normally around the $35 per L mark, wheres as castrol edge 5w/30 is normally $55 (even though i got it at $42 when it was on sale a while back)

thats a very valid point, i did post that when it was freshly changed. but since then prob 300kms have been covered and im not noticing a improvement. im not bashing the castrol edge, im prob just saying tat for the money there may be better options.

Ok thanks. The Magnetic wasn't mentioned by the service mob, so I think they may have just got their oils mixed up.
