Thread: Mazda 3 MPS vs Polo

  1. #11

I was really interested in compareing my Polo's 80-120kmph time, as i think thats the cars strength, roll on acceleration.

I found this from a WHEELS magazine review of cars..

WHEELS quotes: "80-120 in 3rd gear"

    Mazda MPS 3............................ 3.5secs,
    911 Carerra............................... 3.6sec
    HSV GTO .................................. 3.8sec,
    Aston Martin V8 Vantage .............4.0sec.
    XR6 Turbo .................................4.0sec,
    Renault Megane 225 ....................4.0sec,
    WRX takes ................................4.2secs.
    VW Golf GTI ...............................4.4sec,
    Ford XR5 Turbo ..........................4.5sec.

Ive done a few hand timed 80-120kmph roll on runs in 3rd gear.

    3 runs ended up being (3.47) (3.55) (3.61) secs in 3rd gear.

FYI, i was running extremely late and heading south on the M1 the other day to a lunch in Kingscliff....(within the.....ummmmm....speed limits of course). i noticed i was approaching a renault megane sport cup 225 whom also seemed to be in a hurry (weaving in and out of lanes). once he noticed i was trying to get past he sat in the right lane and slowed down so i could not pass him as there was traffic going slow behind a truck in the left lane (about 90km/h).

as the truck slowed down to pull over there was a gap in the left lane which i decided to take with the opportunity of passing this smart ass in the renault. the second i put my indicator on he knew what i was up to and put his foot down. even with 3 people in my car (only him in his) i easily managed to slip by with a smile on my face and pull in front of him (much to his disgust....hurling abuse inside his french 'glass case of emotion').

i was rather impressed with the little polo but had to deal with this idiot on my ass 'chasing' me for the next few k's until he turned off the hwy.

Just goes to prove Queenslanders and French cars are a bad combination...(Queenslanders in any car are a bad combination....).

I had that up here the other day with a guy in a EL Falcon...It is surprising how much the Bogan Brigade hates getting shown up by little hatch backs!!

hey.....cut that out. my last car was a Peugeot 206 GTI, good fun car to drive (being so light with the 2.0L 102kW engine and stiff as all hell suspension) but caused me nothing but trouble and just fell apart. cost me over $5,500 over the 2 years i owned it, JUST IN REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE.......never again! the thing only cost me $13,000 so i figured it wasn't worth keeping so i sold it to my OLDER sister (yes thats right, older) for $10,000.....muhahaha, she now carries the burden. however, since she has owned it, she has never has a problem - maybe cos i fixed them all

BACK ON TOPIC: does that mean i can sort of claim my car does a quicker 80-120km/h than a Porsche 911, HSV GTO, and Aston Martin Vantage

only one real way to find out ---> /|\

I have to say that is mighty impressive that the Polo GTI out does that list of cars! There are some quick cars in that list.

    is your polo chipped??

what feels quicker to you. give us some different aspects.... 0-100, 60-100, 80-120 (not necessarily times although that would be great, but what FEELS quicker). that would be a good test (obvious minus any bias) where it is the same driver on the same day and on the same road etc.

As I said, stock 3 MPS will outgrunt a chipped Polo GTI in 3rd gear from 80-120km/h (barely, maybe half a car length) ... and beyond, slowly increasing a gap. I have tried it before with a mate under controlled conditions.

Since more mods went on my car, things have changed slightly with Polo pulling about half a car ahead and then eventually losing the advantage to about a dead heat.

I reckon it's a bit pointless comparing a chipped Polo GTI to a 3MPS for speed in a straight line. It's 190kw vs 150kw? Even with other mods, in a straight line the 3MPS would surely have the win.

I'm interested to here an answer on this.

Wow! less than 4sec for the polo? that's damn impressive.
