    Mazda 3 MPS vs Polo

    Hi everyone,

Noting that a Mazda 3 MPS is meant to be really quick on-the-roll (aparently better than a 911 from 80-120km/h), wouldnt a 'reflashed' Gti be even quicker ?? not as much peak power and torque but its (the Gti) over 200kg lighter isnt it...would be an interesting comparo...

I think without the flash a well setup Polo GTI & a good steerer would give the 3MPS a good going over up a hill climb. The less weight and power of the Polo I think is ideal for a hill climb, however all the power of the 3 MPS is a bit wasted. On a proper racetrack it's a lil bit different, but I don't think the 3MPS would pull away in the corners.

A chipped Polo GTI will quite easily see off a 3 MPS from a standing start up to about 110km/h. This is due to the fact that the 3 MPS has its boost limited in 1st and 2nd gear and is not making full power. (This is lovely and makes the Mazda boys quite upset )

The power to weight equations of the 2 are very similar:
    3 MPS = 190kw/380NM/1403kg = 135kw/1000kg & 270NM/1000kg
    Polo GTI chipped = 152kw/332NM/1190kg = 128kw/1000kg & 279NM/1000kg

In theory they should be very close in roll on (3rd gear) starts, however in practice the fact that 3rd gear is shorter in the 3 MPS means it is marginally ahead and continues to widen a gap. Typically they both return around 14.3/14.4 quarter mile times.

A few more mods to a Polo makes it more of an even match.

It refreshing to see some tangible data used and a good analysis.

Does anyone have the polo's gear ratio's? Here are the 3MPS:

    1st 3.538
    2nd 2.238
    3rd 1.535
    4th 1.171
    5th 1.085
    6th 0.853

wheel horsepower is all that matters though... theres a bloke on vortex with a 3mps with just a few light mods with 190wheel kw. its a monster in a straight line.

[quote=Mischa;178857]wheel horsepower is all that matters though... quote]

Actually no, wheel horsepower still has to carry the weight of the car and the same power to weight equation still applies. And it is normally measured in 3rd of 4th gear on a dyno. So in 4th the following applies

    Mazda 3 MPS = 148kw atw = 104kw/1000kg
    Polo GTI = 122kw atw = 103kw/1000kg

A chipped 3 MPS obviously is a different story.

Just for interest sake, does anybody know if a chipped 3 MPS still has the boost limit in its 1st and 2nd gears?
