sorry to bring up an old thread, i just got some new grilles and was wondering how exactly you open them up? i have a dremel and i'm keen to open at least the drivers side up for the intercooler, any help would be great

there are 2 versions available i have seen...
one with closed holes and one wit open holes on IC side.
but i have seen that the price is alot more to
i don't have the honeycomb grilles yet but i will in near future.
i would buy the cheapest and drill simple holes in the middle of every honeycomb figure.
and from the back you can drill it out with a dremel tool.
pretty sure when it's finished you will have a perfect vision from the front of the grill!
alot of work to i guess but, worth it!

I used a dremel on mine ... used a saw blade and roughly cut them out, then tidied it up with an abrasive pad. I found it easy to cut from the back as the moulding marks for the honeycomb are obvious and that way you don't do any damage to the "outside"/visible honeycomb.
Here's a pic ... I only cut the drivers side ...

I have the cheaper ones. Big drill in each hole, dremmel to tidy. Never going to look stock, but unless you get up close, you won't notice.

Dean, I'd do the other side as well, you are blocking airflow that the car could benefit from.
A good VAG mechanic once told me these engines need as much airflow as you can, open it up...

great thanks fellas, i'm going to have a go this weekend sometime with the dremmel (they're r32 grilles but it'll work all the same.)
i'll do both to as the ic is on the drivers and the cai is on the other.

opening it up gives more resistance in airflow, but its minimal, you won't notice it.
on the other hand, it's true that it allaws more air to the engine, it's on the side were youre airbox is,
so for the people who have a open airfilter, this woule benifit from opening it up.
also the brakes would get a bit more air i guess.
so, more pro's as contra's, open it up bro
