Nice photos dude. Car's got a mean stance and a mean rebuild. Will also be watching this space.

Hey Louis, any chance of a pic looking down from inside of the engine bay that shows where your intake pipe goes out the front between the radiator shroud and the headlight?

I’ll see what I can find mate. Otherwise I’ll get a pic and send it to you mate.

Polo has turned down a new path for its final phase of this setup. In the end I decided to get a Link G4+ ECU for a few reasons, and will be locally tuned on a dyno by a very well known tuning shop. It’s also going to be running on e85 and a mafless setup so there’s a few things that need to change for this including a new intake which I’ve made a 4” one to match the size of the compressor inlet housing.

The car goes in next week for the tune so I’m prepping the last few bits and pieces before then.

Is that one of the Link plug in ECU's, I recall that they have them for some VAG models?

Yup that’s correct. Direct plug in ecu that doesn’t require any major changes to the factory wiring harness - only real changes are things like running the map sensor directly to the ecu as it has its own on board sensor so you can disconnect the factory map sensor etc.

Was the main reason for the ecu swap to be able to get it tuned realtime/quicker? You have to run an independent wideband with that ecu too don't you? Which one are you going with. I'll be watching ..., I'd looked at these ecu's and am pretty curious if they'll run everything like fans, turbo auxiliary water pump, all dash functions etc
What have you been told regarding the fuel tank, pump, pump assembly, lines etc and their longevity with the ethanol?

Yes that was the biggest reason changing. I'm running a Innovate MTX-L AFR so that will be used and the two factory 02 sensors are removed and blanked off. There is 2 other guys locally running the same ECU in a me7 VAG's and have retained all factory features so that shouldn't be a drama.

Fuel pump and injectors I'm running are e85 safe/capable. I will end up replacing all the under car fuel lines for solid e85 safe lines, but there are guys overseas who have run e85 through the stock lines for years without dramas.

The tuner has recently just tuned and setup a 1.8t A4 running the same plug in ECU so hes familiar with the platform and engine. Fingers crossed all goes smoothly.

Cool super keen to see how it all goes. I only asked re the dash, pump, ancillaries etc because I'd looked into the Haltech 'plu n play' and it turned out that some of the dash features wouldn't run, factory cruise control was unsupported etc
Looks super tidy now that the intake is mafless too. Good luck with it.

Still going to run the TDi badge now that it'll smell like old fruit juice?

Thanks Sam. I’ll keep it updated on how it all goes in the coming week. Hopefully it’s smooth sailing with everything and we can produce some nice numbers.

Yes the TDI badge shall live on

Having run it for over 10 years I have found that issues with E85 are bit over stated/rated, but it is worth keeping mind that it is alcohol so it will "clean" the fuel system for the first few tanks. So any gunk anywhere will get dissolved and pumped. What I do is check the mesh filter on the pump and change the inline fuel filter regularly until it all looks clean. I cut the fuel filter open and check what's inside, when I see no gunk I then revert to normal service intervals.

    Cheers
