Loud Knocking sound when going on bumps. Control Arm Bushes Worn out?

    Hi everyone,

I recently purchase a 2004 Polo GTI (done 80k) in Perth for the purpose of commute. Recently I begun to notice some problems with it and would greatly appreciate your input.

    1. A loud knocking sound coming from the front passenger side when going over bumps and when making sharp turns. I was told by someone that it could be due to a worn engine mount and/or control arm bush. The top pic is my Passenger Side and bottom is Driver Side.

Being a novice and all, I believe the bushes are worn out to the max. What will the cost of parts and labour be if I were to get it done in Perth. Are there other parts that I should consider repairing/changing while I get the front bushes (e.g., rear bushes) done? Being a student, I really don't have much money to spend on car repairs and all that. Are there any members around Perth who might be interested in Pro bono Services?

    2. I've been getting a CEL (P0411; to Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect flow). What does this mean? Could this problem be easily and inexpensively fixed?

    3. The cruise control hasn't been working since I first bought the car. The Green Cruise control light does not come on at all despite it being turned on. How could I fix this?

Your input will be greatly appreciated!

    Many thanks in advance!

Those bushes are fcuked, I'd get Superpro ones GSL Rallysport sell these or SEAT ones.

Your secondary air fault could be the pump dead. Possibly the combi valve is duff allowing condensation into the pump.

Cruise could need to be activated again using VCDS. I had that happen to me once after I flashed the ECU. Google it on ross techs wiki.

    Thanks Gavin.

Are these the bushes that I need? Whiteline W53196 Control arm - lower inner rear bushing

Do you also recommend that I change the rear bushes as well? How much would the labour cost be in your mind?

    Thanks!

    LCA bushes, who's using what

It's only the rears that need doing mate.

I can do them in couple of hours but I have the tool for it. Needs an alignment afterwards. Bushes are about $150-170 from memory from GSL.

plus a couple of hours labour. The SEAT ones are cheaper to buy, same installation time.

Do my own work for the most part, so no idea what a mechanic charges per hour.

Thank you so much Gavin! I will give GSL a call tomorrow to inquire about the SEAT bushes. Ebay would be another opinion I suppose.

Ebay for the SEAT ones, GSL or ebay for Superpro. Have a read of my Cheapy thread in the Polo section. There's pictures in there of the Superpro ones.

I think these bushes do the job Postage is only $25 so you'll get all 4 for <$100

You can get the OEM partnos (and search for them) from partsbase.org

those ebay bushes are for a Passat. They'll probably fit a Golf but i doubt a Polo would be the same.

Cupra R bushes should fit - bargain price too

I'd get the Cupra ones, if not splashing out on Superpro. They last well. Std replacements will just fail again in time.

Thanks Brad. Just to be absolutely clear, the part number that I am after, for the Cupra one, is RP183RS right? Its stunning that shipping costs almost 5 times more than the price of the bushes themselves .
