lightened flywheel noise? turbo bolt loose?

    Hi guys,

I have ECS stage 1 kit installed about 500km ago, and first time I was driving enthusiatically on back roads yesterday...

I didn't hear anything much, but as I drove more, I noted new noise like chatter like noise (slightly high pitch) on hard full throttle acceleration in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear, (beyond that, I was going too fast), which wasn't there with my dual mass flywheel.

It doesn't seem to affect the car's performance, but this is something I didn't expect. i knew I would get some idle chatter, but not when full-on acceleration... when driven normally (off boost, below 2.5k rpm) I didn't notice this.

It's only done maximal 450-500km since the install, and all these were gentle city crawling speeds and constant high way speeds so I did not notice this at all. (Only noticed on full accelration today!)

Also if I accelerate in 1st gear to let's say 6000rpm, and let the throttle out, while it's decelerrating it will make similar noise, but more prominent on full throttle acceleration....

I have PMed chipped, and he also mentioned about possible loose turbo bolts. This was in my differential diagnosis as well.

I am booked into go in tomorrow or friday (whenever I can really)...

What do you think it is?? It doesn't sound like the gearbox itself.
I have had my down pipe fitted end of May 2009.

    Any thoughts?

in there is a small discussion on the noise from the LWFW. Chipped was complaining of the same noise.

    Han!

Welcome to the world of motorsports!

The noise you are experiencing is probably from the gearbox.

The dual mass flywheel absorbs the gearbox vibrations generated by the primary shaft that has a semi-straight cut.

Now with the new flywheel, you probably can hear it very loud when the engine is on idle. When you are decelerating it looks like a plate vibrating?

    Thanks both!!

I read through chipped note on accelaration noise. Raspy noise... same on mine.

Maybe it is... the flywheel. As long as my car is ok....
I don't mind the noise, but I never heard that noise before. If I drive normally, I don't notice these noises.... just when you are on full song!

    Hmmmm.....

I agree with this statement, idle chatter for sure and im sure on the over-run it would be there, on high accel i havent personally heard it but as mentioned the big cushion called a Dual mass flywheel is gone. There is a rare difference between the 2 flywheels, weight , appearance and function. IMO you are experiencing a normal noise with nothing to worry about. Ive done one recently on a Pog with K04 and chatters, no issue, clutch feels great and transfers the power nicely.
Doesnt discriminate the POgs either same thing with Golf, no cushion , you will get the chatter
Enjoy the clutch mate, itll take what you give it.

    Thanks guys and Jmac.

I tested my car yesterday, it sounds to me the flywheel is actually making that raspy noise. Must be normal thing. Only thing I need to do is to check if the turbo bolts are all ok.

Boost still maxes to 22psi on full song briefly then goes back to usual 17-18psi.

What sort of noise does loose turbo bolts make??

Was driving like a maniac from 0-60 again and again to test for that noise... I didn't notice it until I was driving in between buildings, or next to a very close wall. Normal driving, I didn't notice anything much. But yesterday I had problems loading the engine (i.e. 2nd gear, low RPM, put the foot down to get the boost up) due to traffic... I think that seems to bring up the noise more..

insanekiwi - how'd you go with this? I got over the noise after awhile and enjoyed that little extra acceleration.

    Hi Chipped,

I just got back from skiing... been off the forum for a week.

The noise, I do not notice it as much when the car is still not warm... if I start driving enthusiastically for 30 mins or more, then I can hear the noise a bit more... normal driving around town, the noise is not there....

only after full blast, the car is all hot and heated up, I can hear those slight metal to metal noise on acceleration, and more noticeable on deceleration..

The car drives very well, and clutch take and go is fantastic. Acceleration is slightly faster too.

    Overall, performance wise very good.

I hope this is normal thing with the noise!

I got a Gti here at the moment and believe me you will know when the turbo is loose!!!! This vehicle also has ECS light stuff and has the usual chatter but not a patch on a loose K04!!!!!!!!! Wire locking this sucker for the win
