Other than spring compressors and a variety of sockets and spanners, are there any other unusual tools required to install a new set of shocks and springs?

A strut spreader is a useful tool for doing these. Much easier than try to prise open the hub to get the strut out.

I forget the size of the spline drive that is used for the clamp bolt, M14 possibly? I used to use a pair of vice grips to hold the bolt while undoing the nut.

Also the drivers side sturt needs compressing a great deal to clear the hub. Made worse by the driveshaft.

Yup, M14. And near impossible to find anywhere with one. I tried Repco, Autobarn, Supercheap, Bunnings, Auto1 (or something like that) and another specialised hardware store and found nothing in that size. I even tried multiple outlets of Repco, Autobarn, Supercheap and Bunnings. So I've borrowed Gavin's when I've needed it

Try ebay perhaps.

I ordered the m14 spline socket from China via ebay (often refered to as a Ford bellhousing tool). Gave up waiting for it after about 3 weeks and went ahead with installing my H&R springs - I used a pipe wrench type tool in the end, vice grips would do the same job. Those bolts weren't particularly tight on my car. Of course the right tool turned up the next day!

The most helpful thing I found on the net for the operation, particularly the front right, were the comments made by user M7R in this DIY: Tutorial - Fitting Coilovers On A Polo 9n/9n3/fabia/ Ibiza Mk4 Etc. - FAQ - Club Polo Forum

That made the removal a breeze.

Haha, something I'm not immune from myself...can't believe I manage to get away with what I do. Maybe it's the fact she doesn't have to work atm, or maybe it's something to do with the playhouse I'm building...whatever, ain't about to question the magic
