How much money do you have? I could spend it all for you.

Ignoring the cost of a turbo.

    Front mount intercooler and pipework
    Injectors
    MAF
    Fuel pump
    Turbo Back exhaust
    Suspension
    Brakes
    Software

$5000 wouldn't be enough to do it properly, it would make sense to spend the extra on buying a car that is faster to start with.

403 Forbidden plus shipping, plus labour.

You could probably have it rebuilt on Marion Road for less though. Adelaide turbo systems.

Seriously, apart from me, I haven't heard of one giving up.

    It shouldn't be a concern.

The turbo should be good for another 100k at least they are a rare failure part, price seems reasonable for that vehicle too. Previous 9N (2006) owner with stage 1 tune never had an issue with my Gti other than a speeding fine but thats not the cars fault

    Get new relatives LOL

It's ignoring servicing that kills cars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFOqW0x7oiI

If it's got history, it'll be fine.

I'm guessing your relatives are familiar with nissans... 200sx's and skyline turbo failures are not uncommon. They run a ceramic turbine that are known to fail with increased boost/heat. If you/friends are familiar with jap cars, you can't run a blow off valve on these, needs to be plumb back, they won't run.

VW's are more susceptable to bush failures/short life span, e.g lower control arm, engine mounts, suspension strut tops. They use a soft rubber that deteriorates. Mechanically they are typically very solid engines.
