I wouldn't have imagined it would be. You should get a 12month warranty on a new battery, some offer longer. If buying a battery, check the date on it and make sure it's not more than say 4months old. As they generally last only a few years, you don't want one that's already 12months old.

In saying that, my sisters battery on a Hyundai Getz lasted 7years. Gotta be happy with that. Running heaters/demisters, lights and wipers put quite a drain on it so with the recent weather in QLD it's meant a big increase in dead batteries lately - had a battery replaced last week on a friends car and spoke to the battery guy.

Take it in and get the codes read under warranty...Tell them whats happening, and they will be able to better diagnose it than us on here...

You may luck out and get a free battery out of it.

Had the exact same problem with my Pug 206, it'd struggle to start cold (and stall if I drove off immediately), but if I then turned it off and on again, it'd be fine.

The fuel pump was on its way out, it was losing pressure after charging up initially. However, this is on an '03 model with 120k kms..

I thought battery first too, but got it checked and it was fine.

Does the car shake at all when you try and start it? I also like to leave the car to idle for 30s before driving off on cold starts.

Battery should be covered under the original 3 year warranty. It won't be covered in any dealer warranty though as even Allianz exclude it from the official VW extended warranty.

But if it is under warranty anyway, regardless of the problem just take it into VW and hopefully they will see what is wrong if anything.

I actually might have a similar problem! This morning started the car cold and the car fired, then after a second or two seemed to struggle for about 3 seconds (vibrating excessively and making a clicking noise) before settling down to its usual startup routine.

I don't think it would be battery as I imagine it would have done its done once the engine fired up, so I am thinking fuel pump.
