See my post on REVOed for 5 hours, gearbox sound.

My shifting is sweet. No crunching at high revs.

However, I am having little sounds from ? clutch ? gearbox.

    Have a read of

    http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ead.php?t=8368

So I guess I do have a problem. I have clicked 'yes'.

    Awaiting service...

Talked to mechanic, he goes 'this is a robust gearbox, blah blah not weak like Polo GTI (previous ones.. this one comes from Golf GTI... no problems'

Yeah right. I don't trust you.

well, weak synchros/crunches doesnt mean weak gearbox. I drove my mates integra type s the other day and it crunches into third from time to time and they have a jewel of a gearbox. The 1.8t polo box should be fairly robust with the torque they cope with (chipped), i would start getting worried if someone shreads some gear teeth or spits out the diff etc.

    No crunching here either btw.

    gearbox woes...... again....

sorry for the delay in reply.... mine was in for 3 days for the remove and repair...............

But 5 days after getting it back... driving up the road at 65kmh and there was a bang from the engine bay.. then a strange whirring noise... was just 500m from home so pulled in. Got VW roadside assist to come out and they ordered a flat top to take it back to dealer....
Dealer pulls gearbox to find fault and tells me that even though they had the box apart 5 days before it was completely unrelated and 5th gear has now let go... even though i was in 4th when it went bang....
    I smell a rat here.....
after 2 and a half weeks I now have the car back......

    not too impressed.............

Might be time to make sure they replace the entire gearbox!!

    gearbox

Yeah, the dealer does what they are told via VWA and in my case it is rebuild rebuild rebuild......
its just the inconvenience that really gets me... fair enough they give me a loan car.... but it is a pain.... at least it cuts down the k's on my car.... I have now got 27000km and i picked it up Feb 2007... I have put 4000km on loan cars through repairs and service...LOL.
Any one else have any problems with 5th gear or is it more likely that something was not done properly with the first issue and it went bang?

Does any one have problem with

    1) about 50-60 on coasting or just very low load on accelerator on 4th gear with slight humming? I took it to dealer, manager knew the problem already, said it's just mechanical diff humm. And said 'they all do that sir, no problem'. When you press accelerator a bit more (say 1/3 or 1/5th) it goes away. After 65km/h, the hum disappears.

    2) Hard acceleration then off throttle, or put the clutch in quickly, I will get the drive train slack / gear lashing. Sometimes, when the car is stationary, put clutch in, shift to any gear, with clutch still in, and back into neutral, and let the clutch out, on biting point (on release) it will make a very quiet 'chink' noise which can only be heard in enclosed single car garage. Garage checked gearbox oil -> apparently looked brand new, no metal pieces or anything around magnet. Oil level is perfectly fine too. Manager said just don't drive like that...

Otherwise, everything else is good. Shifting at high RPM - no problem.

I am going to try another dealer tomorrow / Tuesday. Anyone else?
