Has anyone modified a Polo 6N?

I'm looking at doing a few mods to my 97 Polo and was wondering if anyone else has done much work to theirs. I've already lowered it and fitted 14 x 6 mags which has helped the handling but I've seen someone here selling coilovers for a reasonable price and might be tempted to fit them. Anyone know how well they work?

Before I do that though I want to fit a rear sway bar which I'll get from the wreckers. I'll do a scavenge and find a front bar off a small car around 23mm thick and make up some brackets to fit the Polo rear. If the handling is close to my old modified Golf then I'll be happy to leave it at that.

In about a month I hope to fit a Golf 1.8 and gearbox which will take the power up to 77kw. Not going to set the world on fire with this combo but I do over 900 k's a week so fuel economy is a major concern. The extra power and torque should enable the Polo to stay in 5th gear for most of my daily driving instead of constantly changing down to 4th for the hills so even though the 1.8 has 40% more power it shouldn't be worse off petrol wise.

I know most of the posts here are for the GTI but it would be nice to know I'm not the only crazy one trying to get more from his pre 2000 Polo. Or am I the only one?

    Cheers

Is the 6N the same platform as the Ibiza that was sold in oz? I think there's a few guys on here with modded beezas, but you might be on your own with the 6N polo. There's some wicked 6N's on UK polos. The 6N GTI even had HID's I think.. cool looking little car.

Yeah have a look on UK-polos.net. They have a much bigger following over in the UK.

I had a '97 Polo 6n as my first car..
gutless as all hell. So its good your going to the golf 1.8!

bought some weitec springs (40mm drop) and some sticky rubber, and boy was that an entertaining car in the twisties!!!

too bad about the crap 1.6 8v that was bad on juice and really underpowered, and no real mods out there to change it either

Bad on juice and gutless? Mine does 5.9 litres on the freeway and 6.2 between Braidwood and Canberra each day. Best I've got is 780 k's on a tank and that's with no 5th gear. It got heaps better once I removed the very restrictive intake plumbing. It could even overtake cars going uphill!

Anyone know where I can get a cheap, good looking bodykit? OK, I know it's no Golf but someone must make something that makes the car look a bit better than the ugly sister to the Cinderella Golf.
