switching insurance is not an option unfortunately

    so back to my question.

the H&R springs DO lower it by 35mm? (which would then void insurance?)

I thought i remember reading somewhere that the standard polo is up higher, so the drop on the GTI is not really 35mm

GTI's are 15mm lower than standard Polo. However that insurance co's requirements were only 30mm from base model height of a model.

I am able to confirm that lowered suspension is only acceptable for Motor Vehicle Insurance if all of the following apply:

    • not been lowered by more than 30mm (approximately 1 and a quarter inches) from the original suspension height of the base model

    • any part of the undercarriage of the vehicle has a minimum clearance of 100mm from the road surface

    • any part of the undercarriage of the vehicle is not lower than the wheel rims of the vehicle

    • the springs are fully captured (secured) in suspension mountings when the suspension components are at full extension (ie when the vehicle is jacked off the ground)

    • the suspension bump-stop clearance has not been reduced by more than 1/3 of the original clearance

    • the modification complies with your local State Registration Authority registration guidelines, and

    • springs must be replaced, not cut or heated.

Does anyone here have H&R springs with NRMA? If not, if I were to get these springs, would I be covered?

I really want to get my gti lowered!!

    Thanks for help guys!
Do you know if NRMA has a limit on the number of mods allowed?

NRMA will allow any number of legal mods to your car as long as you advise them and are willing to pay for them (and the costs can add up quite significantly). If you have a highly modified car it may be better to look at a company like Just Cars.

That's strange. I advised them my intention to modify my car and they said they won't charge me extra for modifications? As long as I tell them what I'm having done.

Although I fall in the 30+ category....but that shouldnt be any different for the maturer drivers right?

What about if your young (I'm 21)? I've heard that they only allow 3 mods for inexperienced drivers.

You're lucky if they'll even insure you in a turbo car.

If you don't increase the value of the car and don't do anything to major (ie upgrading turbo) then you may get away with it. I suppose it depends what your modifications will be. I'm with NRMA now but when I start further modifying I'm going to start ringing around.

    Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd bump up a new thread instead of starting a new one. My suspension is currently being installed and I bought H&R springs (30-35mm) Part No: 29333-3 brand new which arrived last week. I'm thinking with a 215/45/17 profile, having 35mm springs will sit nicely to begin with, but I'm concered the springs will then settle in after a few kms of driving and then sit over the tyre. The reason I know this is because I've seen a few pics of guys with 215/40/17 with 35mm drop.

Just so you know, I'm pandantic about these sort of things, and prefer a flush look, the guard has to be about 2 fingers above the guard and it needs to look clean.

I'm thinking of selling these and opting for 20mm springs. I guess the reason for the switch is because I want something that will give that height I want, but also with the occassional trackday, I want to have no issues with the guard rubbing, rolling guards etc etc!

Can I grab your thoughts before I put it up for sale?

    Cheers.
