GIAC stage 1 tune - Pinging

    Hi Guys,

Sorry in advance if this has been covered but I could not find a proper answer for myself.

I've recently had the GIAC stage 1 tune and very happy with the power. However, every now and then in 2-3 gear I can hear the engine pining on WOT (3500rpm-4000rpm). I thought it could be a heak soak issue like everyone has mention in some cases, however I have let the engine settle down on a cool weather day and still not helping. What makes it more difficult is the pinging only occurs every now and then.

I've done the below to help fix the issue but has not worked
-Fresh batch of fuel BP 98
    -injector cleaner
-As mention below plumb back the BOV

Car is quite standard beside MODS below

    -PF160
    -Drop in pod filter
-Turbosmart dual port BOV (which I have now put back to plumb back just incase that could be the issue as there was a thread talking about pining issues due atmospheric bov) Still pinging however

Don'ts and Don'ts of Running an Atmospheric BOV

I just wanted to know if anyone with a GIAC stage 1 tune is having the same issue and what other problem solving I can do that wont cost me money like the below. Could it be just be the AIR/FUEL tune in the GIAC tune?

    temp sensor?
Plugs? maybe go one colder? NGK BKR7E

Any feedback would be much appreciate.

Do you mean pinging - as in detonation? If so, that's not right. Have you spoken to the workshop who put the tune on and asked them to investigate?

GIAC aren't a very popular tune for the 1.8T here in Oz, perhaps you should enquire about a refund and go with CustomCode who have the 1.8T market covered in Oz.

Much as I'd like to take your money

All the GIAC outlets are reputable places, don't mess about with an internet diagnosis, run it back there.

It could be lots of things.

Most likely the intake temps, given the weather has just taken an up turn.

I wouldn't discount the sparkplugs and a new set wouldn't do any harm. If it doesn't do it first thing in the morning then I am favouring the hot air.

    Ok,

Yeah, the internet diagnosis? So many think that they can get their cars fixed on line, instead of driving back to the workshop.

It was pinging straight after the flash when we took it for a test drive. They informed me to come back after they come back from the Christmas break. They suspected it was bad fuel so gave me the additive to clean the injectors on my next batch of fuel (Bp 9. Problem is still occurring.

Thanks for the feedback Gavin. Definitely not looking to get a quick fix on the internet. I've learnt my share of basing information on forums and such, just seeing if anyone has experience something similar before I wait to take it back to the shop.

Tuner did mention something about a different colour temp sensor. I think a green one? does anyone know if it makes any difference?

OK. How many kms the car done? What condition is the engine in? Are there any fault codes logged in? Does the tuner have a workshop?

I know that there are tuners who aren't mechanics and they don't know any better than resetting the fault code when there is something wrong. Having the tune done by not licensed mechanic or shop where they have no mechanic will not always work well, especially when the car is older or has an underlying issue.
