I know that there are tuners who aren't mechanics and they don't know any better than resetting the fault code when there is something wrong. Having the tune done by not licensed mechanic or shop where they have no mechanic will not always work well, especially when the car is older or has an underlying issue.
My car has done just over 80,000km. I would say engine is in quite good condition. Rocker cover and other common oil leaking area is good.

The Tuner does have a proper workshop. Happy with their service so this is not a name and shame thread of cause.

Yes there was a fault that did come up.They said it was the diverter valve. Yes I do think they just cleared the fault code. Could this be the issue to causing the engine pinging?

    It could be.

How old is the fuel? Run it as low as you dare then fill the tank up.

I see lots of pulled timing from bad fuel or low octane fuel.

Checking the output of the water temp sensor is easy with VCDS.

I'd say it needs logging to see what's going on.

    Hey Gavin,

Yeah I will need to see the workshop again to check loggings.

I didn't know pump fuel would get so much issues with octane levels. I would expect it on my previous car which was on e85. Then again that also suppress knock in the engine.

If the timing is bumped up a long way by the tune and it's a really hot day and the fuel is weeks old and and........

It's just the easiest things often get overlooked.

I flashed a mk4 gti last year and the guy had 91 octane in it. It was obvious from the passenger seat it wasn't right and was my first question. Half a tank of 98 made an immediate difference.

I'd be a little concerned about a company that acknowledges your new tune is pinging and to come back when its convenient for them (after you've done possibly a few hundred or few thousand k's over xmas). IMO they should have put it back to stock until a suitable time they can resolve the unknown issue.

the ECU should be able to work around many limitations, i'd definitely chuck in a new set of plugs for the $20-40 it will cost you, I'll be changing mine every 10K kms from now on.

if you're game, logging may help.
