that noise it just excess fuel being burnt in your exhaust nothing to worry about, but as for the gearbox i have no idea.
Hi guys,
Just had my car Revoed for next 5 hours. Got an awesome deal, if I were to continue.
I've been driving fairly hard to see what the 'rave' about REVO.
Yes, the car has transformed. It's like a slingshot!!
I have had noise in the past when shifting gears (it feels like loose cables going clack clack underneath, and when I revoed it and been shifting like mad, it seems to sound worse. If I drive slowly and gently, then I don't feel it.
Also, if I take the foot off the accelerator fast (just drop it, like you are trying to make your blow off go louder), it would go slight crackle crackle noise on passenger's side. Or I could generate same thing if I put the clutch in and drop it out. This is intermittent, and I let the REVO guy do it and heard the same. He said there shouldn't be much to worry about, thinks it's just slight lax in cable.
I haven't REVOed it permanently as I do want to get the problem looked at.
Have you guys had same problems? Shifting works perfectly fine. I am dying to find out what the extra 10-12% of performance I will have once I get full REVO not the trial. This is a new software from June 2007 batch.
Has REVO just exacerbated problem by giving it more performance? Unlikely... but I have been using the gearbox more vigorously, up shifting and down shifting, engine braking etc.
1) do you guys get noise from time to time shifting?
2) Any noise when drop the clutch (when you are moving at slow speed)?
Thanks. Trying to figure out what it is.
- just been driving around more as I usually do with my wife in, slowly and well paced. With music on (with conversation), I did not hear that at all. Maybe I had it all along, and did not hear it because I was driving it gently? It's not a knocking noise.

Oh and yes, no problem shifting at any RPM range. No crunching. Just I can hear shifting mechanism working too well!! Hmm... inherent problem?
I am waiting to get my REVO fully done... my dealer is getting cars REVOed from same guy from today as well!!![]()
Okay, here is an update again. Been working long day shifts and working weekend also, so just haven't got time to get my car booked in yet.
today went for a short drive after dinner.
Gear shifting characteristics are the same. No more louder shifting etc.
However, the main sound which I start to hear after
1) I put the foot down to 1/2 throttle to more then let is drop
2) Release accelerator quickly
There is small 'clack' noise from engine bay slightly towards passenger's side.
This is easily reproducible. Can also be done with clutch by 'pushing in the clutch' quickly when accelerating fast.
Feels like something is loose... I have never been driving like that before so maybe I've never felt it. Or is it because I have 310nm that there is something loose?
Some input will be highly appreciated.... so I don't think this is excess fuel burning off. Gear shifting into all gears is very good. No crunching. Smooth shifting.
What is this?!?!? Damn it!
De-Revoed today and took the car to the dealer.
Talked to manager and driven for about 5 minutes.
I tapped on the accelerator (around peak torque 2.5k rpm - 4k rpm), and it would make that small 'chuck' noise. Drop the accelerator give it again with tap.. 'little mechanical chuck' like something went lose then you pull it quickly (like a chain rope)
He said it sounds like 'drive line slash/slack or something like that'. He said I shouldn't be driving around like that.. (which I don't!! normally!). Also able to generate that sound when rapidly accelerating with less smooth action of clutch. It's not loud but it's definately there.
Or was it drive line slack, where drive line is hitting something? He said it's okay, but bring it in next Saturday (which I booked) and get it looked. He said he will tighten things and check gearbox oil / and check the magnetic plug to see if there anything going on.
He doesn't sound very concerned.... Should I be concerned?
He said it's unlikely to be gearbox mount as this will be more cluck where you can feel it. Mine is not audible with audio on.
Anyone had this problem? Shifting is all good.

No Mate ... haven't heard that in mine, but I would advise you not to flog it AT ALL until it has been fixed. If it's drive line slack, could do some serious damage if it lets go.
Cheers and best of luck,
Dave
Thanks for the reply Dave.
As I have mentioned I have deactivated REVO chipping... it's actually sad. I realised after chipping you get a lot more turbo whistle / and obviously power.. which is what I am missing!
So what ever the mechanic described
1. gear lash noise
2. drive train slack
I am minimising the drive, and keeping rev under 3k.
Man I just don't have the time to take the car in until next Saturday...
*SOB* but then I walk to my work...
The car does not make any noise if I drive it with gentle foot on the clutch like gradual not abrubt dropping it or very rapid change etc.
I got full REVO now. Boost 6 / Performance 6 / Fuel 3. I have to get it checked out next week with laptop on AFR to bring up the Timing to at least 4 or 5. This will bring up my performance even further!
It's awesome to drive around...
I realised that I can make a lot quieter version of that noise I am getting by
1) sitting in neutral stationary, and put the clutch in, then let it go up quickly. It will make a very quiet click noise once on the way up. This only happens when I do it quickly.
2) This same noise gets slightly louder when you are on load. Noticed slightly noiser after chipped meaning it is related to torque.
3) If I drive fast, but gentle on clutch doesn't make that noise.
Hmmm.... throw out bearing? (doesn't sound like it).... input shaft bearing?
I am waiting to get seen by mechanic on Saturday... I hope they find something. It's not that loud (and can't hear it with windows open, only audible with windows closed pretty much), just want to know if it's not going to get worse.
I have a SPS switch on me, so I will switch off when I go in...
As expected, they found nothing wrong from inspection...
The manager did it himself.
He said, he checked all mounts, and checked gearbox oil level, gearbox magnetic plug. He said it's just like it left the factory, no gunk / metal anywhere and gearbox oil at correct level.
All mounts are intact.
He said he just tried on Mk4 Golf GTI and said makes similar noise...
It's all normal and enjoy... is what he said.
Anyway... I guess I still have warranty till March 09 so we will see how it goes!
I asked for extended VW approved warranty, and apparently in NZ they cover the car until 125000km. Cannot get VW approved warranty from then onwards. 3 years costs $1650NZ / 2 years $1400 / 1 year $1100 or something rather... I won't do 60000km within 3 years, so may as well get another 3 years later on...
Ah - This gearbox is known to be knotchy/make noises.
They did it in the Golf GTI, did it in the Audi A3s and it doesn't suprise me they are doing it in Polos too.
