    Gearbox..opinions...advise please

    Hey Guys,

As some of you know I have recently purchased an 06 GTI with 30,000kms on it. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on some gearbox issues I think I have and yes I have spend copious hours reading and searching the forum!

After having it for a while I decided to try a spirited change from 2nd to 3rd (over 6000 rpm) and the box crunched. I thought maybe I stuffed the change but it happenned again and again even when the change was not that fast!! I then jumped onto the forum and this seems to be a reoccuring probelm.

I have read about a common probelm that some polos are having with regard to cruching gears over 6000 rpm. Can anyone definately tell me if what exactly VW recalled with regard to the gearbox's???

Considering the car has only done 30000km and I bought it off an 84 year old (yes an 84 year old) I do not think it has any abuse what so ever!!!

What can I do to fix this??? Is it a case of changing the oil in the box (i have read this somewhere on the forum).

Will VW do anything about this considering it is quite a common probelm> do i have a leg to stand on with them??

Im quite disappointed really as I was started to fall in love with this car.

Sorry for the long post and if anyone can shed some light on this and even recommend someone who can look at the car i would greatly apppreciate it.

    Thanks

VW will tell you to change slower and send you on your way.

The two things you can do to improve the shift is fit an upgraded engine mount to reduce the movement in the motor and box (APR dog bone insert) and secondly change the gearbox oil over to Redline MTL.

Besides those two, the other only other thing you can do is slow the changes down.

Current Ride: Evo 8 MR, Fabia MK3

    Hey man,

    You got one! well done...

I recomend both of the changes mentioned by Break. I have had no crunching issues, but redline fluids have helped my gearbox.

The engine mount is very common, I couldn't tell you a lot about the improvement as I had this done with a chip and lower springs about a week after I bought the car.

The gearbox is not the greatest for fast changes, if you get the revs right and give the girl a sec, it should just slot in.

Touche. Mine usually crunches 1st to 2nd and can sometimes it refuses 3rd without a decent nudge. So i just slow my shifts down, it never crunches then

What the others said should help!! Also try shooting Jimmy (JMac) a PM, he's the Polo Guru!

So there was no recall on these boxes??

I mean a car with a gti badge should be able to shift quickly surely?

I had an old swift gti and that box was lightning (even though they break sometimes, not mine though

I will ask the tuning guy when I get my ship done about this engine mount and gearbox oil.

I have noticed the engine does nove aorund quite alot when the bonnet is up.

The engine mount is advisable when you get the chip, I'd see if they can do it at the same time. For the gearbox oil, they may not use redline (its not the only quality oil out there), but JMac has tried this with the Polo gearbox with good results in many circumstances.

The GTI can shift fairly fast, but I'm guessing the engine is also capable of a little more torque than the Swift GTI (stock turbo). You can take it to VW to see what they say, but as it is outside warranty, I don't like your chances.

    Which tune are you getting?

yeah i will probably get the engine mount either way

it still concerns me though, espicially if im about to spend some more money on it making it better (i.e. chip and stereo)

im getting the 98 octane tune, i think it is exactly the same as the APR one. I havent booked it in yet, but it will be very soon.

I just think its stange that it crunches, i mean no other car i have owned (there have been quite a few) has ever done it like this.

so vw wont warrent a fix or accept there is a gearbox probelm?

Have a search, there are quite a few threads on the gearbox issues, as I have not had any, I've not been really interested in those threads.

Didn't you notice the crunch when you test drove it?

I have searched and it is hard to find any definative answers - people seem to go round and round.

No i didnt notice it as i didnt really shift at 6000rpm - as I said the owner was an old guy and personally i wouldnt appreciate it either if i was tet driving a car and someone was smashing gear changes at 6000 rpm

Firstly, don't shift at 6000 rpm - its an exercise in stupidity. The torque has well and truly rolled off by then so in reality all you're doing is revving your engine for absolutely no reason - you're actually going slower. I shift at 5000, but you can shift at 5500 if you really must...

Secondly, the crunching will go away with time. Mine crunched, it stopped, I had it rebuilt for unrelated issues, it crunched again, then it stopped again.

If you wanna hasten the process, do the following:

    0. Put in neutral.
    1. Put park brake on.
    2. Step on brake.
    3. Start engine.
    4. Gently push the gearstick into the gate that crunches, the aim is not to engage the gear, but to push against the stick until you notice a slight drop in rpm (50-100rpm). Do this a few times for 10-15 seconds each time. This sounds strange, but you will notice an improvement.
