On stock I can understand wanting to push it for all its worth, when you get it chipped, you will find there is less need to redline.

Hotcar, I'm not sure what tune you think is the same as the APR, I doubt any tuners (quality ones) are sharing code. Pretty important that if you are handing over cash you make sure they are a proper licenced (or trained) distributor of:
APR, Custom Code, GIAC, Oettinger, Unitronic, Revo Technik, Evolve Technik.

There are others, not sure what they are like. Think Oettinger was only for TDI?

The two things you can do to improve the shift is fit an upgraded engine mount to reduce the movement in the motor and box (APR dog bone insert) and secondly change the gearbox oil over to Redline MTL.

Besides those two, the other only other thing you can do is slow the changes down.
There is more than the APR insert available, Super pro bushes are a good option too, few up here running around with it. Redline MTL has great friction and really helps with those syncros, ( tool box in a bottle).
    Well worth a try

my wifes gti used to crunch going from first to second no matter what revs it was doing.
vw changed the type of oil in the gearbox. This seemed to fix it for a few months then the crunching came back.
Took it back to vw and they replaced the second gear synchros.
It has never crunched again in any gear at any rpm.

It is an insteresting little topic and it seems there are quite a few of us with the same probelm.

I will change the oil and the engine mount and see how i go. I personally think if it gets worse VW should change it for nothing considering the car has only done 30,000 kms - even though i know they won't.

noone - i was thinking of getting the chip done by these guys http://www.europeanautotech.com.au/
they did the suspension on the car (which was done before i bought it) it has H & R springs and shocks - they seem to do quite well in the car, im still very new to the polo gti world and dont know the tuning tricks to these europen cars
I have heaps of knowledge in V8's and japenese cars but this is a whole new world to me

They did my tune, engine mount and springs. They are an APR dealer. Derek is well known by many on here, if you can get some of his time his advice is good.

So the 84yr old previous owner lowered the car too?? righteo...

As others have said, there's little point reving to 6k rpm, she's out of put shortly after 5. On the race track (circuit) I'll shift around 5200-5500 and my top speed is still within a few km/h. I also wouldn't be smashing the gearbox - what's the point? In saying that, your problem is not uncommon and is understandable you'd want it rectified so as others have said, change the fluid and get the engine/gearbox mount.
