Gearbox Oil to suit both 02A and 02J/R?

Hey - I know this has been done to death but I just wanted some opinions on what gearbox oil to use for my Polo GTI and my 02A TDI gearbox (CTN code) that will be mated to my 1.8T MK1 Cabby.

I would like to assume that I can buy a gallon drum of something like Redline MTL and it would work really well for both but when I searched on Vortex there were people saying that Redline isn't great in 02As - but I know a lot of the Polo guys swear by it in their 02Rs.

Are there any other really popular choices suited to the Australian climate (i.e. only a few weeks of cold weather.) that would be great for both boxes - it just makes sense to buy a Gallon drum and do both rather than pay smaller bottles + shipping or whatever.

My Polo is still on factory oil after 142k - I've driven it through 3 winters and that's the only time it struggles - it'll grind on pretty much the first shift into 3rd when you drive it on winter mornings - 4-5 degrees ambient. The rest of the year it's fine - I'm just trying to kill 2 birds with one stone before winter hits again and I need to lube up this new box for my cabby.

This is what I'm looking at - Redline MTL Gear OIL 1 Gallon Bottle | eBay $45 for each box should be perfect - Apparently my CTN box is listed as 2.2l capacity and the 02Js are 2.0l.

    Hoyhoy.

Just grabbed a bottle of Red Line Lightweight Shockproof gear oil, just to renew the same from 2009, its been good to me.
I doubt that this is the same as MTL, because its three times the price.
    Hooroo.

Personally I have never found a better oil than Syntrax, second would be Syntrans. Anecdotal but My race cars have jelly for boxes but seem to have less issues than others, for the big boys Hollinger recommend the Castrol as well.
redline definately has its fans but it does leave a funny residue gum (it is apparently supposed to) that I always think would hold contaminants.
Either are going to be better than a OEM grade

I use Penrite or Total, and never had any issue. I see the RedLine as an overpriced product. But, I understand that some people must have it.
