    Gearbox oil leak

    It appears i have a gearbox oil leak. I've tightend the sump nut but where can i find the dipstick?
    How do i find out the oil level?

    There's isn't one. You usually have the engine running and top up until it dribbles back out the filler hole.

    So the engine oil doubles as the gearbox oil...?

    Hoyhoy.

    No it doesn't, Gav's talking about the gearbox filler hole, (which is a 17mm allen key) don't go & fill the engine until it runs out the top.

    Possibly a bit too much assumed knowledge on my part there. I hope he reads your comment before carrying on Eddy!!

    Ok, the filler hole is above the sump? I'm used to Subaru's
    Does anyone know what oil goes in the gearbox? 75w-85? *NB I don't have an owners manual*

    I've had a good experience with Redline MTL Gear Oil, and you'll find that it's recommended in several places on this forum.

    The original factory oil eventually leads to gear grinding due to the poorly matched friction properties. VW had a recall to replace the synthetic oil with a mineral oil, but that didn't solve the problem.

    You haven't said what engine and gearbox yet, it would be remiss of anyone to advise an oil based on the information so far.

    I am leaning towards a manual not an auto now but ???????

    Filler plug is on the front side of the gearbox, about halfway up.
    '07 Transporter 1.9 TDI
