boost and oil pressure. oil pressure is handy, if anything serious goes wrong, that's the one to watch. also, from cold starts, once oil pressure settles to around 21-22psi at idle, then you know it safe for spirited driving as the oil temp is at optimal level.

Couldn't agree more GT3, oil pressure is the first gauge you should install on any car IMO considering its the life blood of the engine you want to see exactly whats going on in there.
That set up and the gauges look great too, i like how every thing ties in together

I thought about installing guages in the top compartment thing but I have also been thinking that having gauges in that location begs someone to attempt to steal them.

I know the GTI has an alarm but that wont stop someone trying to do a smash and grab. I had a gauage in one of my previous rides, the car was parked in a carpark in broad daylight near a gym/sporting complex. When I came back to the car about 40 min later my drivers' side window was next to the car. The alarm had gone off but that did little to protect my car and stop that ba$tard from taking my gauage.

Lets face most people would do nothing if they see someone breaking into a car. Some may call the cops but by then its too late, your valuable are gone and the offender nowhere to be found.

I would think twice about mounting gauges on top of the dash or anywhere else where they are visible to someone walking past.

sj88, how d wiring goes with your gauages? Just drill holes on the top tray? Did you do that yourself or fitted by a mechanic? If so, which? It looks pretty good! I am thinking to get oil temp and boost...

agree to u bubu, if they guy is desperate, i reather prefer him to ask me for money rather then smash my window... I can feel the pain.... nothing is worst to see your ride got smashed...

Can tined window helps to prevent thief from smashing ur windows (film keeps the window in one piece, hence cant get through) or help them to smash you window (glass pieces stick together, hence wont hurt him)?

My window was tinted and it was in one piece on the floor. I cant comment if it was easier or harder for them as I have never tried breaking someones window.

The reason I say more is - they are still Japanese sized single dins, and the Euro single din size is about 2~3mm's larger each side compared to the Japanese din. Furthermore, you need to remake the mount as mounts that come on them wont hold the weight of the gauges in the Polo's dash and figure out how to fill in the sides.

Just several things to consider before you dive into the project.
Thanks mate - yes I appreciate the top cubby is the more ideal place to mount a boost gauge but as apready mentioned above it'll also make it very vulnerable to theft (that's not to say thieves can't still steal the gauges and take the radio with them if they really want to if I mount them in the 2DIN hole).

I've now bought a cheap cubby to fill the upper DIN space, to be replaced by boost/oil pressure gauges at a later stage - yes unfortunately they will be out of line of sight but I'm thinking about buying a lidded cubby to hide a GPS unit at yet another stage and mount it so that I can simply flip the lid open to reveal the GPS, besides the gauges only need a cursory glance)

The cubby box probably wont be able to accommodate for most GPS's as the clearence isnt very good. I'm halfway through making a double gauge cluster for where the centre upper cubby box is. I'll post pictures once I'm done.
