I tried to achieve an OEM look so I opted for the NewSouth gauges. Finding suitable gauge pods was difficult, and the Newsouth steering case pods are only available for Golfs. I spoke to others with gauges mounted above their stereos, most said that while it was a clean fit visually, when driving, they were too far down to glance at, which makes that option dangerous and not worth doing IMO.
The best option then, is the dash cubby - it's recessed, and essentially serves no real purpose, while providing a perfect (and safe) place to mount gauges. The challenge is finding gauge holders that suit the car, aren't tacky, eg cheap moulds. I checked out the Audi TT Stuff website and got the idea to use carbon fibre autometer gauge holders from there:

I personally think that two gauges (instead of just one) provides a better balance and layout. See pics below of how this setup worked my Polo GTI:
