    Fitting a Boost Controler

    Hey,

    With all the talk in the other thread regarding Diverter Valves it got me thinking - has anyone tried one of the gated t-piece boost controllers or an electronic boost controller on the little polo yet...

    Cheap (>$200) Turbosmart Boost-T Manual

    Expensive (<$800) Turbosmart e-Boost 2 Electronic

    From what i understand the ECU may control boost pressure rendering one of these devices useless and possibly sending the engine into limp mode but i would be curious - i can't find anything on the web regarding this... Also from looking at some dyno charts (and as evidenced by the black behind of my white polo) the polo runs quite rich so adding a few psi to the engine should not hurt the fueling too much... thoughts???

    I think you'll find additional coding is required in the ECU to make these useable...and that's already being handled by the various chip tunes

    Ok i have done a little more digging - i think our cars are equiped with an N75 module which kind of acts like an electronic boost controller. This module is controled by the ECU. The ECU pulses this N75 unit with different signals to deliver different boost levels - this would explain the way the TC works by limiting boost when wheel spin is detected... The N75 module bleeds off boost making the wastegate open earlier...

    I am guessing if you pull this unit out and put in a bleed valve then the ECU will go into limp mode as it has no way of self metering boost and will think it is going to kill itself... another way i can see of installing this is to do it downstream of the N75 module but then it can only control what it is supplied upstream being the N75 modlue which has already limited boost...

    Ths only possible way i can see this working is to run with the TC always off hence max stock boost always being supplied by way of the inbuilt wastegate spring... this would bypass the N75 module as it no longer pulses... then when its wet switch it on and you are no worse off??

    Reason i ask timbo is these tunes are $1200-$1800 whereas a good quality bleed valve can be bought for $150-$200 and give good gains...

    ive already tried putting in a turbo smart boost controller and what happened was,
    the turbo is alot louder for about a second or so the timing retards itself giving no extra power AT ALL.

    The only way in my opinion is to MOTEC or piggy back it through APR or GIAC it

    but with the prices that APR and GIAC want is quite out there
